Sir Thomas Teddeman (also Teddiman ) († 13 May July / 23 May  1668 greg. ) Was an English Vice-Admiral in the Royal Navy .

Life

Neither the date of birth nor the first years of Thomas Teddeman's life have survived. He came from a family of shipowners from Dover , where his father still lived in 1658. Since his name was also Thomas, some files cannot be clearly assigned. However, the young Thomas Teddeman does not appear to have served in the Navy during the English Civil War . He is only mentioned in 1660 as captain of the Tredagh , with whom he operated in the Mediterranean during the last months of the Anglo-Spanish War (1655-1660) . On May 31, Jul. / June 10, 1660 greg. he met six Spanish ships off Algiers , which he pursued as far as Gibraltar .

After the end of the war he received successively command of the ships Resolution (from November 1660 the new name of Tredagh ), Fairfax (May 1661) and Kent (1663), on which he became the English ambassador (the Earl of Carlisle ) brought to the Russian Arkhangelsk . In May 1664 Teddeman commanded the Revenge and finally from 1665 the Royal Katherine . With this ship he served in the Anglo-Dutch War (1665–1667). During the victorious battle of Lowestoft on June 3rd jul. / June 13th 1665 greg. Teddeman commanded the rearguard of the Blue Squadron of the English fleet as Rear Admiral . Since he was particularly distinguished in the battle, he was on June 30th July. / July 10, 1665 greg. knighted as a Knight Bachelor ("Sir"). His attack on the Dutch spice fleet in the port of Bergen failed a little later in the battle in the bay of Bergen on August 2nd July. / August 12, 1665 greg. . In the " four days' battle " (June 1666) he commanded as Vice Admiral the Blue Squadron and in the following " St. James's Day Battle " (July 25 jul. / 4 August 1666 greg. ) The White Squadron of the British fleet. In the last year of the war, 1667, he was left without a command. Only one brother named Henry Teddeman still appears on the Royal Navy lists.

In the following year Teddeman got into an argument with the English Parliament. However, he fell ill with a fever and died on May 13th July. / 23 May 1668 greg. . At his funeral the following day, many members of the Navy were present.
