Thomas Trotter (musician)

Thomas Trotter (born April 4, 1957 ) is a British concert organist . He has succeeded Sir George Thalben-Ball as organist at the Townhall of the City of Birmingham since 1983.

biography

Trotter studied at the Royal College of Music , King's College (Cambridge) and with Marie-Claire Alain in Paris. In 1979 he received first prize at the St Albans International Organ Festival . In 1980 he made his concert debut at the Royal Festival Hall in London. In 1983 he was appointed organist of the Townhall of Birmingham, making him the 4th holder of this post in 125 years. In addition to St. Margaret's Church in London , he is organist at Westminster Abbey .

Trotter has given concerts in Europe and the United States regularly since the 1980s. I.a. He has played the organs in the Berlin Philharmonic , in the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, the hall of the Musikverein and in the Konzerthaus in Vienna, in the London Royal Festival Hall, the Severance Hall in Cleveland, Ohio, in the Princeton University Chapel in New Jersey, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, St. David's Hall in Cardiff, the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie , in St-Ouen in Rouen, St. Bavo in Haarlem (Netherlands), Weingarten Abbey , the concert hall of the Mariinski Theater in Moscow and Yale University's Woolsey Hall .

Honors

  • 2001: Awarded best instrumentalist by the Royal Philharmonic Society . Trotter was the first organist to win this award.
  • 2003: Honorary Doctorate from the University of Central England, Birmingham.
  • 2006: Honorary Doctorate from the University of Birmingham
  • 2012: Performer of the Year Award from the New York City Chapter of the American Guild of Organists .
  • 2016: Medal from the Royal College of Organists
