Thomas Weiss (born November 18, 1990 in Merano ) is a former Italian natural track luge . With his doubles partner Andreas Leiter he became Italian champion in 2006 and junior world champion in 2008. In the World Cup , the duo finished eight times in the top five.
Career
In the winter of 2004/2005 Thomas Weiss and his two-year-old partner Andreas Leiter started in the Intercontinental Cup. They achieved two podium places and fifth place in the overall standings. In the single-seater Weiss did not come close to these results, here his best result by far was a fifth place in the opening race in Kindberg . At the European Junior Championships 2005 in Kandalakscha , Weiss / Leiter finished fifth in the two-seater, and Thomas Weiss came 14th in the single-seater.
From the 2005/2006 season the double white / ladder started in the World Cup . Neither of them took part in single-seater races in the World Cup. In the first half of the season, the two remained behind the world elite with an eighth and two seventh places, but at the end of January 2006 European Championship in Umhausen they reached fourth place. Things went even better three weeks later at the Junior World Championship in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , where they were only beaten by their compatriots Patrick Pigneter and Florian Clara and won the silver medal. In the last three World Cup races of the season, they came in fourth, fifth and sixth and were sixth in the overall World Cup. In the same year they also became Italian champions in doubles.
The World Cup season 2006/2007 began Thomas Weiss and Andreas ladder with a fourth place finish in Latsch , but in the other five races they only came not to the places eight and nine, which they also fell back in the World Cup to eighth place. At the 2007 World Championships they did not participate, but at the European Junior Championships in St. Sebastian , they won just like last year at the Junior World Championships silver medal. In the single-seater, Thomas Weiss finished 14th.
In November 2007, Andreas Leiter suffered an ankle fracture during training , which is why the duo had to take a break at the beginning of the 2007/2008 season . Thomas Weiss therefore competed in several single-seater races in the Intercontinental Cup. It was not until February that they were able to compete again at the Junior World Championship 2008 in Latsch, where they won the gold medal with the fastest time in both rounds. In the single-seater, Thomas Weiss took eleventh place. At the European Championship 2008 in Olang , which took place a week later , they only came in tenth place. In the two remaining World Cup races of the winter, the duo achieved positions seven and four.
In the 2008/2009 season , Thomas Weiss and Andreas Leiter showed fairly consistent performances. They came fourth twice and fifth twice, as well as sixth and seventh each time. They achieved fifth place in the overall World Cup. They achieved the worst result of the season at the 2009 World Cup in Moos in Passeier , where they only came eighth. In the team competition, they achieved fourth place together with Hannes Clara and Evelin Lanthaler in Team Italy II. After the 2008/2009 season, Thomas Weiss and Andreas Leiter did not take part in any more competitions.
