Thomas de Mahy, Marquis of Favras (born March 26, 1744 in Favras near Blois , † February 19, 1790 in Paris ) was Lieutenant 2 e classe in the Swiss Guard of the Count of Provence and was the victim of a political plot.

Life

Thomas de Mahy, Marquis of Favras entered the military and began his career with the Musketeers of the Guard , took part in the campaign of 1761, became a lieutenant in the Swiss Guard of the Count of Provence, later Louis XVIII. , married Princess Viktoria Hedwig Karoline von Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg-Hoym (1749–1841) and after the outbreak of the revolution , his ambition led to the decision to give King Ludwig XVI. and save the monarchy in some way.

With the help of a band of recruited helpers, he wanted to attack the Constituent Assembly and kidnap the king and his family to Peronne . Surrounded and betrayed by police spies, he was arrested in December 1789 and sentenced to death by hanging as a traitor . The Count of Provence, aware of his plan, did as little to save him as the king. He was remembered by the public for his last words. When he was presented with the verdict to read, he then said mockingly: "I see that you made three spelling mistakes."
