description

Appearance and foliage leaf

The thyme-flowered scorpionfish grows as an annual , herbaceous plant that reaches heights of up to 60 centimeters. The upright stems are hairy with little downy hair.

The oppositely arranged leaves grow both basal and stem leaves. The petioles of the basal and lower leaves are longer than the leaf blade ; on the other hand, the stalks of the upper leaves are shorter than the leaf blade. The simple , bare leaf blades of the basal and lower leaves are ovate to ovate and lanceolate with a length of 10 to 35 millimeters and a width of 7 to 20 millimeters. The base of the spread is heart-shaped and the edge of the spread is sawn-toothed or sawn. The leaf blades of the upper stalk leaves are egg-shaped and wedge-shaped at the base of the blades.

Inflorescence and flower

The annual inflorescence consists of pseudo whorls that are relatively far apart , each containing six to twelve flowers and elliptical, pointed and entire bracts .

The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorph double perianth (perianth). The five sepals are fused into an approximately tubular to bell-shaped calyx. The five purple-blue petals form the 7 to 9 millimeter long, two-lipped crown that only slightly protrudes from the calyx. The upper lip has two lobes ; the lower lip consists of three lobes, the middle of which is edged and larger than the lateral. The two rear of the four stamens are longer than the two front. The tip of the stylus is divided equally into two parts.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = about 14, 20.

Occurrence

The thyme-flowered scorpionfish is native to the Baltic States and northern Russia southwards to Bulgaria , Ukraine and the Caucasus region . It was naturalized in the Canary Islands , France , Great Britain , Poland , Scandinavian countries , Romania and the Crimean peninsula . It was also introduced in North America and is now common in the northern United States and Canada .

The thyme-flowered scorpionfish populates more or less dry and open habitats.
