Jeon Ji-hee (born October 28, 1992 in Lángfāng ) is a South Korean table tennis player . She took part in the 2016 Olympic Games .
Career
Jeon Ji-hee was born in China under the name Tian Minwei . She was instructed in table tennis by her father, a table tennis trainer. Due to strong Chinese competition, she moved to South Korea and took on its citizenship in 2011. Because of a determination by the world association ITTF , she was not allowed to compete in all tournaments for South Korea for three years.
She had her first international appearances on the Pro Tour 2011 , where she won the Japan Open in the U-21 segment and qualified for the Grand Finals. There she lost in the final to Kasumi Ishikawa . Her first world ranking was 72nd place in May 2011, and in January 2012 she was already 25th. In 2012 she qualified again as an U-21 player for the Grand Finals and reached the semifinals. In the following year, she also played successfully in the adult division, won several medals in doubles on the World Tour and was able to take part in the Grand Finals in singles, where she was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Liu Shiwen. In 2014 Jeon took part in the Asian Games and won bronze in mixed with Kim Min-seok .
On the World Tour 2015 she was able to qualify for the first time in singles and doubles with Yang Ha-eun for the Grand Finals and reached the semifinals there. In 2016 Jeon Ji-hee won the South Korean championship, achieved a new personal record with 11th place in the world ranking and was thus also the best-placed South Korean. This also qualified her for the Olympic Games . Here she came with the team in the quarter-finals. In the individual competition, she entered in the third round and reached the second round by defeating the Swede Matilda Ekholm , where she was eliminated by Yu Mengyu from Singapore. At the Universiade 2017 she won three gold medals in singles, mixed and with the team. In the Grand Finals, for which she had qualified with Yang Ha-eun, she did not take part this year.
Jeon had her first World Championship participation at the 2018 Team World Championship . After the unification of the North and South Korean teams in the quarter-finals and a semi-final defeat against Japan, the team won bronze. Further bronze medals for Jeon followed in 2018 at the Asian Games in the individual and team competition as well as in the double competition of the Grand Finals . In 2019 she took part in the Asian Cup and the World Cup for the first time , where she was eliminated in the round of 16 against Cheng I-ching . At the Team World Cup 2019 she reached the semi-finals with South Korea, with Yang Ha-eun she took silver at the Grand Finals .
