The Tibet Center Austria (TCA) was founded by the 14th Dalai Lama , the scholar Geshe Tenzin Dhargye and the Tibet Office in Geneva with the support of the Carinthian regional government in Knappenberg near Hüttenberg. It offers an educational program on Tibet's knowledge and culture at an academic level and is therefore unique in Europe.

history

Carinthia has a certain tradition of connection to Tibet, which goes back to the life's work of Heinrich Harrer , a long-time friend and former teacher of the 14th  Dalai Lama . This is why the idea of a Tibetan cultural center arose under Governor Jörg Haider . Knappenberg, a district of Hüttenberg (Harrer's birthplace) at 1000 m above sea level on the Saualpe in north-eastern Carinthia, was chosen as the location .

In 2005 the Dalai Lama agreed to support this project of an image and facility with an attached hotel, presented by the Carinthian state government and the market town of Hüttenberg . Since a local family of entrepreneurs withdrew from the project, the construction did not get beyond the laying of the foundation stone.

The Tibet Center was founded in 2008 by the Dalai Lama and the Tibet Office Geneva, the representative of the Tibetan government in exile in Central Europe, and has been under the auspices of the Dalai Lama ever since. It was implemented as a non-profit association and functioned from the opening on October 31, 2008 to May 2014 as an educational institution in rented premises in the Knappenberg Music Center. The Dalai Lama appointed Geshe Tenzin Dhargye as the director and permanent teacher of the Tibet Center. President of the association is Ngodup Mutup.

In May 2012 the nine-day visit of the 14th Dalai Lama to Austria was organized and carried out by the Tibet Center. There were events in Klagenfurt , Salzburg and Vienna that attracted around 30,000 visitors in total. Another 15,000 viewers were there via live stream. A total of 200 volunteers were on duty at these events. The proceeds from the events were used to cover costs for humanitarian purposes.

In 2014 the headquarters of the educational institute were relocated to its new building in Knappenberg. On May 17, 2012, the Dalai Lama solemnly blessed the building on a visit to Europe; the inauguration took place on October 17, 2014.
