Patrícia Nunes Penicheiro (born September 18, 1974 in Figueira da Foz , Portugal ) is a former professional basketball player. For most of her career she played for the Sacramento Monarchs in the Women's National Basketball Association as a point guard .
Career
college
Ticha Penicheiro played for the Old Dominion University women's basketball team . In 1998 she won the Wade Trophy .
WNBA
Penicheiro was selected in the 1998 WNBA Draft by the Sacramento Monarchs as the second player overall. She played for the team from the 1998 season until the monarchs dissolved after the 2009 WNBA season and was elected to the WNBA All-Star Team four times during that time. In the 2005 season she was also able to win the WNBA championship with the Monarchs. After the end of the Monarchs, she played two seasons for the Los Angeles Sparks and, when she finished her career in the WNBA in 2012, for the Chicago Sky . She was often the best assist giver in the WNBA, but was only officially honored once for it due to the late introduction of this honor in the WNBA. She also holds the WNBA records with 16 assists and 10 steals in one game. Penicheiro was in 1999 and 2000 into the WNBA First Team and 2001 selected team to the WNBA Second.
After the 2012 season Penicheiro played no more games in the WNBA. Up to this point, she played in 15 WNBA seasons in the regular season 454 games, she was 423 times in the starting lineup and scored 2747 points, 1490 rebounds and 2599 assists. In 43 playoff games (43 of them in the starting line-up) she scored 249 points, 133 rebounds and 204 assists. She was honored for her achievements in the WNBA 2006 in the election of the WNBA All-Decade Team . Although she was not one of the ten players directly elected to the team, she was honored with the addition of an “Honorable Mention” along with four other players. For her achievements in the WNBA on the 15th anniversary of the league in 2011, she was chosen among the WNBA's Top 15 Players of All Time .
Europe
During the WNBA season break, Penicheiro played like many WNBA players regularly for clubs in Europe. After starting her career in Portugal, she then competed for teams from Poland, Italy, Russia, France, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Turkey.
International
She played a few international tournaments for the Portuguese national team, but could not achieve any major successes due to the weak level of the team.
