The Tieffenbruckers were a well-known family of instrument makers (mainly lute and viola makers ). It came from the district of Tiefenbruck in the municipality of Roßhaupten near Füssen , which in turn was an important center of lute and violin making . Many family members emigrated in order to establish workshops in the European cultural metropolises, at royal courts and in large trading cities and to practice their craft successfully. The emigrated masters often kept in touch with their homeland. In some cases they obtained their wood (especially yew) from the Füssen region and journeymen or apprentices followed them from home.

The spelling of the family name varies greatly.
