The Tignanello is a red wine from Tuscany . It was created in the early 1970s under the direction of Marchese Piero Antinori and his oenologist Giacomo Tachis (1933-2016). The Tignanello is regarded as an innovative pioneer of modern Italian top wines, the so-called super Tuscans , and has decisively shaped Italian viticulture. The first year was 1971.

development

In the early 1970s, the Marchesi Antinori experimented in the core zone of Chianti with the classic Chianti grape variety Sangiovese and for the first time dispensed with the white wine proportion that was then still prescribed for Chianti Classico. Since this did not correspond to the ( DOC ) production rules for Chianti Classico, the very high quality wine was only allowed to be offered as Vino da Tavola , in the lowest quality level.

The success was nevertheless sensational, especially since the Marchesi also use barriques , which was completely unknown in Italy at the time. From 1975 onwards, French grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc were also integrated into the cuvée (80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc).

The Tignanello, together with the Sassicaia , was the starting signal for the modernization of Italian viticulture, especially in Tuscany, and has found numerous imitators. With the Tignanello (and other top wines) Antinori still opposes the regulations of the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico and deliberately markets the Tignanello as a wine of the Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT), i.e. outside the classification of the Chianti Classico DOCG .

location

The wine is made exclusively from grapes of 57 hectares large single layer produced Tignanello that in 320-380 meters above sea level is located south-west facing on calcareous soil. The altitude is in the Val di Pesa valley in the middle of the Chianti Classico DOCG wine-growing region , near the village of Montefiridolfi . The vineyard is owned by the “Tenuta Tignanello” winery owned by the Marchesi Antinori family. The wine is produced in this winery, which is located at the foot of the Tignanello vineyard.
