Career

Cassel began playing football at TSV Malente in his youth and played in the senior division for TSV Pansdorf , SV Sereetz and TuS Hoisdorf , before moving to the then regional league club VfB Lübeck in 2001. He was always a substitute goalkeeper for the Lübeck team and was only used on the last match day against Dresdner SC in the Regionalliga season , when VfB's promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga was already certain. In Lübeck's first second division season, Cassel made his professional debut on October 18, 2002 against MSV Duisburg . In a collision with Duisburg captain Carsten Wolters , the VfB goalkeeper was injured before half-time and was also out for the next few months with a broken shin. In 2003/04 he was used two more times for VfB, but only played the full 90 minutes in the home game against FSV Mainz 05 .

Afterwards, the sociology student was still active for a few seasons at Meiendorfer SV and Eintracht Norderstedt . He received his doctorate in 2006 with his dissertation The field of football. A social and cultural historical investigation into the beginnings of football in Schleswig-Holstein 1890-1914 and after the end of his playing career he became an official at the Schleswig-Holstein Football Association. He has been the association's managing director since 2017.
