action

In the Spanish countryside, Héctor lives with his wife in a house that they are renovating. Through binoculars in the forest behind his house, Héctor sees a young girl who is about to undress. When his wife drives away to go shopping, he investigates the forest, but is stabbed in the arm with scissors and chased by a mysterious man wearing pink bandages around his face. After he fled the forest and broke into a mysterious house, Héctor is contacted by walkie-talkie by a scientist who also warns him about the bandaged man and directs him to his location nearby, where he promises Héctor safety. There he is convinced to hide from the attacker in a large cauldron-like device. After he has left the cauldron, Héctor discovers through observations of his house that apparently a doppelganger of his lives there now, who is doing all the same actions that he did before.

After a discussion with the scientist about the machine and what happened there, Héctor learns that he has traveled an hour back in time , that he saw the "original" Héctor in the house and that he is now Héctor 2 . It is now explained to him that he has to stay where he is and that the events of the last hour with Héctor 1 simply have to be repeated again so that everything becomes normal again. Despite the scientist's objections, Héctor 2 escapes in his car, but is pushed off the street by a red van and injures his head, which he then wraps the old bandage around his arm wound in an awkward manner. After being rescued by the young girl he had previously observed in the forest, he continues with the attempt to repeat the events - which he previously experienced as Héctor 1 - for fear that Héctor 1 is not accurate due to inaccuracies in the process to be able to move back into the time machine. But the girl manages to escape, and Héctor 2 goes back to his house after hearing a scream. There he is attacked with a wooden table and then chases a woman through the house up to the roof. There she slips and falls to her death. Héctor supposedly sees his own wife crushed in her red coat on the floor and desperate.

Héctor then contacts the scientist over a walkie-talkie, remembers Héctor 1 and convinces the scientist to lure his past self into the laboratory with the warning that he will be followed. After driving to the laboratory and getting into the machine, Héctor 2 insists on going back in time one more time. But he doesn't tell him why. The scientist reveals to the surprised man that there is a Héctor 3 who has not only dictated all previous events to him, but has also ordered him to stop Héctor 2.

After removing his bandages, Héctor 2 gets into the time machine and it closes. When knocking noises can be heard, the scientist opens the device and Héctor 3 appears. Héctor 2 now appears in the time machine. Héctor 3 has decided to interrupt the unfortunate and fixed chain of events by wiping out the other Héctors. He takes the scientist's red van and now follows Héctor 2. That is the reason for the crash of Héctor 2, but Héctor 3 is also passed out after the accident. He wakes up a few hours later, and after telling the scientist over the handheld radio to stop Héctor 2, Héctor 3 accidentally scares the girl (which explains the scream). Because Héctor 2 follows the sound, Héctor 3 and the young girl seek refuge in Héctor's house. After finding his wife, terrified of Héctor 2 approaching the house, Héctor 3 hides his wife in his shed before starting the events that lead to the accident on the roof: the young girl too find to cut off her ponytail , put his wife's red coat on her, and tell her to run upstairs. It is she who will then lie crushed on the lawn.

While the well-known events take place on the roof, Héctor 3 sits with his wife on the meadow. While Héctor 2 accidentally crashes the young girl (mistaking her for his wife) and drives away in the car, Héctor 3 prevents his wife from intervening when you hear the emergency sirens approaching from a distance. The chain of events in Héctor's time seems to be broken.

Receptions

Reviews

Los Cronocrímenes has a rating of 87% (certificate “Fresh”) on Rotten Tomatoes , based on 70 reviews up to January 2015. At Metacritic it received a rating of 68%, based on 15 reviews.

Jeannette Catsoulis of the New York Times describes the bicyclist's nudity and the rapid pace of action as an effective means of covering up the film's greatest flaws. However, she praises the “daring” of screenwriter and director Nacho Vigalando in recreating Héctor's disorientation in the film and giving the plot a sense of urgency, despite low budgets and the lack of spectacular special effects.

Boston Globe's Wesley Morris doubts Los Cronocrímenes makes sense, but agrees that Vigalondo's use of a time machine could allay viewers' skepticism. Regarding the planned remake by director David Cronenberg , he speaks of the fact that Vigalando's film "deserved a doppelganger".

The lexicon of international films meant that it was an exciting “time travel film with good actors and a lively story that doesn't take itself very seriously”.
