Semmenstedt is a district of the municipality of Remlingen-Semmenstedt in the Wolfenbüttel district in Lower Saxony .

geography

Timmern (176 inhabitants) also belongs to Semmenstedt (500 inhabitants). The places are located in the wide and fertile loess loam and black earth areas between the Oker and Magdeburg .

history

Semmenstedt was probably founded in the pre-Carolingian, Old Saxon times.

Semmenstedt, located on the old Heerstraße Braunschweig-Halberstadt, has been mentioned in a document as Zemmenstidde since 1022 . In the following centuries the names changed quite frequently. The spelling Semmenstedt appeared for the first time in the inheritance register of 1569 . In 1802 there were 339 inhabitants in Semmenstedt.

A reconstruction of the former village center is no longer possible today. The houses were all light constructions made of wood, clay and straw and were repeatedly victims of violent storms or prey to the fire that destroyed the entire village not just once. The oldest street in Semmenstedt is Dorfstraße. The Leipziger Straße is probably older than the Dorfstraße because it is part of the old Heerstraße from Braunschweig to Halberstadt. Today's buildings along Leipziger Straße are clearly more recent than those along Dorfstraße.

After the Second World War , the Schlesierweg / Pommernweg housing estates were built in the south-east of the village, as well as several single-family houses west of Leipziger Strasse at the two exits. The new building area "Semmenstedt-West" has existed since 1995. There are two bells in the church tower, one of which was melted down during the First and Second World Wars. In 1954 the new bells could be consecrated.
