Timur Asqaruly Qulybajew ( Kazakh Тимур Асқарұлы Құлыбаев , Russian Тимур Аскарович Кулибаев Timur Kulibayev ; * 10. September 1966 in Alma-Ata ) is a Kazakh manager and son of the Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev . He is chairman of the supervisory board of the four state-owned companies Kazatomprom , KazMunayGas , Kazakhstan Temir Scholy and Samruk-Kazyna and a member of the supervisory board of Gazprom .

Life

Timur Asqaruly Qulybajew was born on September 10, 1966 in Alma-Ata as the son of Asqar Altynbekuly Qulybajew and his wife Raissa Aldabergenqysy Qulybajewa. In 1988 he graduated from Lomonosov Moscow University .

Qulybayev began his career in business in the Kazakh Ministry of Finance in the 1990s. He became Vice President of Kazakhstan's state-owned oil company Kazakhoil in 1997 and three years later in 2000 he became Chief Executive Officer of KazTransOil , a subsidiary of Kazakhoil that manages the company's pipelines. The following year he became CEO of TransNefteGaz, which controlled all of the pipelines in Kazakhstan. After the Kazakhoil company was dissolved and merged into the newly founded company KazMunayGas , Kulibayev became its vice-president for three years. He resigned from this position in October 2005 and became chairman of Kazenergy two months later .

In June 2006 he returned to KazMunayGas as the new President and Chairman of the Board of Directors. Also in 2006, Qulybayev became chairman of the newly established state holding Samruk, which he left in 2007. In 2008 he returned to Samruk-Kazyna, the successor company to Samruk. In October 2008, Timur Qulybajew became chairman of the supervisory board of the Kazakh nuclear company Kazatomprom and in 2009 chairman of the supervisory board of the Kazakh railway company Temir Scholy and the Kazakh oil and gas company KazMunayGas.

Since 2011, Qulybayev has also been a member of the Gazprom Supervisory Board and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Samruk-Kazyna. He resigned from this position on December 26, 2011 due to his role in the Shangaosen massacre .

Accused of money laundering and corruption

In September 2010, the Swiss Public Prosecutor's Office opened a case against Qulybajew for money laundering . His wife, Dinara Qulybajewa, had bought a villa on Lake Geneva in Switzerland for the fantasy price of 75 million francs; National Councilor Carlo Sommaruga suspects that this was used to carry out money laundering. The said amount of funds of unknown origin allegedly laundered by Qulybayev is $ 600 million, which is said to be at least in part bribes from 2000 to 2005, when he was CEO of KazTransOil.

Private life

Qulybayev is married to Dinara Nursultanqysy Nazarbayeva, one of the three daughters of Nursultan Nazarbayev. The couple have three children, a son and two daughters. He is also the President of the Kazakh Boxing Federation.

His fortune is, according to the Forbes Magazine about 1.1 billion US dollars . He is the main shareholder of Kazakhstan's Halyk Bank .

Timur Qulybayev caused a stir in the UK when he bought Prince Andrew's Sunninghill Park property in 2007 for £ 15 million, £ 3 million above the property's value, only to let it fall into disrepair.
