Carlo Sommaruga (born July 8, 1959 in Zurich ; resident in Lugano ) is a Swiss politician ( SP ) and a member of the Council of States .

biography

Carlo Sommaruga studied law at the University of Geneva and was admitted to the bar in 1989.

Sommaruga gained his first political experience from 1991 to 2001 as a member of the legislature of the Thônex municipality . In 2001 he was elected to the Grand Conseil of the Canton of Geneva , of which he was a member until his election to the National Council in the 2003 elections . He belonged to the Foreign Affairs Committee , the Legal Committee , the Drafting Committee , the Judicial Committee and the Delegation for relations with France at. He was also president of the « Parliamentary Group for Relations with the Kurdish People».

In 2007 Sommaruga tried unsuccessfully to have the Agassizhorn in the Bernese Oberland renamed through an interpellation because he wanted to "get Louis Agassiz off the pedestal". The Federal Council condemned the namesake's racist views, but saw no reason for renaming. The basis for the experiment was Hans Fässler's book Reise in Schwarz-Weiss (2005).

In 2016 he was elected President of the Swiss Tenants' Association .

In the 2019 elections , he was elected to the Council of States in the second ballot .

Carlo Sommaruga works as a lawyer for the Geneva Tenants' Association and is the father of four children. The former Swiss diplomat Cornelio Sommaruga is his father, the SP Federal Councilor Simonetta Sommaruga is a distant cousin.
