Manuel Tornare (born April 20, 1951 in Geneva , resident in Geneva) is a Swiss politician of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland (SP) and has been a member of the National Council since November 5, 2011 .

biography

After attending school, Tornare studied humanities at the University of Geneva and graduated with a master's degree . He then worked as a teacher of philosophy and French literature at the Collège Calvin , before he was doyen of the Collège Sismondi between 1984 and 1993 . He was then director of the Collège Candolle from 1993 to 1998 .

His political career began Tornare, who became a member of the Social Democratic Party in 1973, when he was first elected a member of the municipal council (Conseil municipal) of Geneva in 1979, and was a member of this for twenty years until 1999. He then became a member of the Administrative Council (Conseil administratif) of Geneva in 1999 and was a member of it for ten years until 2009. As such, it was three times, 2001, 2005 and 2008 as mayor mayor (mayor) of Geneva.

In November 2009 he was elected to the cantonal parliament , the Grand conseil of the canton of Geneva .

In the Swiss parliamentary elections in 2011 , Tornare was elected a member of the National Council for the SP and has been a member of it since November 5, 2011. In the election, the SP achieved 19.1 percent of the vote and can therefore have three of the eleven representatives of the canton of Geneva in the National Council .

Tornare is both President of the Switzerland- Basque Country Parliamentary Group and Co-President of the Parliamentary Group on Human Rights . He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Grand Théâtre de Genève and a member of the Ligue Internationale Contre le Racisme et l'Antisémitisme (LICRA) committee.
