Ueli Leuenberger (born March 26, 1952 in Oberönz ; resident in Rohrbachgraben BE ) is a Swiss politician ( Greens ).

biography

Ueli Leuenberger, who comes from a working-class family, completed an apprenticeship in Lucerne after finishing school in Oberönz . In 1972 he moved to Geneva. There he began studying social work at the Institut d'Etudes Sociales de Genève , which he completed with a research thesis on work ecology.

After completing his studies, he took on various tasks in the social and trade union area: As head of an asylum center of Caritas , responsible for the «Hotel-Restoration» sector of the SIT ( Syndicat Interprofessionnel de Travailleuses et Travailleurs ), social worker at the Swiss Protestant Churches' relief organization ( HEKS) and advisor to the Center Social Protestant .

In 1996, Ueli Leuenberger founded the Albanian People's University ( Université Populaire Albanaise ) in Geneva , a pilot project in the field of integration which he headed until 2002.

Today he is a vocational school teacher at the home economics school in Geneva and occasionally works as a trainer in the field of integration and population from the Balkan countries.

politics

In 1988 Ueli Leuenberger joined the Green Geneva. In 1990 he became President of the Greens in Geneva. The left-green coalition managed to achieve a majority in the city parliament and government. From 1991 to 1997 he was a member of the city parliament. From 2001 to 2003 he was a member of the Grand Council ( Cantonal Parliament ) of Geneva.

On June 1, 2003, Ueli Leuenberger was able to move up to the National Council for Patrice Mugny , as he was elected to the executive branch of the city of Geneva.

In 2004 he was elected Vice President of the Swiss Green Party and in April 2008 President. He thus succeeded Ruth Genner . Leuenberger was party president until April 2012.
