Guillaume Barazzone (2013)

Guillaume Barazzone (born January 13, 1982 in Geneva ) is a Swiss lawyer and politician ( CVP ). He was a member of the Government of Geneva from 2012 to 2020 and a member of the National Council from 2013 to 2019 . From June 1, 2016 to May 31, 2017, he held the office of mayor of Geneva.

biography

Guillaume Barazzone is of Italian and Swiss nationality . He completed his school days in Geneva and studied at the University of Geneva , where he received a license in law with an exchange year at the University of Zurich in 2005 . In 2008 he was admitted to the bar and was admitted to the Geneva Public Prosecutor's Office. He practiced this profession until 2012 at the law firms Lenz & Staehlin (2008–2010) and Schellenberg-Wittmer (2011–2012).

In 2011, Barazzone earned a Masters in Law (LLM) from Columbia Law School in New York. He also studied at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University .

Political career

Barazzone joined the Christian Democratic People's Party (CVP) at the age of 18 and took over the chairmanship of the young CVP Canton of Geneva. He became a member of the Geneva City Council and a member of the Committee on Art and Culture.

In 2005 he was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Geneva and re-elected in 2009. As a member of parliament, he sat on the Tax Committee, the Legislative Committee and the Financial Control Committee.

November 2012 he was elected to the Administrative Council of the City of Geneva (city government), where he took over the chairmanship of the Department for Urban Environment and Security (DEUS). With his election to the Geneva City Council, a period of 20 years ended without a CVP representative in the Geneva city government. From June 1, 2015 to May 31, 2016, Barazzone was Vice President of the City of Geneva.

Barazzone was elected to the Swiss National Council on December 9, 2013, where he sat on the Legal Affairs Commission.

In November 2018, an expense scandal in connection with his office in the Geneva city executive by the Geneva Court of Auditors came to light, in which it was noticed that Barazzone's costs are well above the normal costs and it has been found that these are probably in a private context. As a result, he did not run for election to the National Council in 2019 and in 2020 for the Geneva city government.

Honors

In 2012 he was a member of the forum of the 100 most important personalities in French-speaking Switzerland . In December 2014 he was awarded the silver medal in the panel of the Geneva parliamentarians published by the Tribune de Genève and received the title of the Revelation of the Geneva MPs by the weekly magazine L'Hebdo .
