Pierre Maudet (born March 6, 1978 in Geneva ) is a Swiss politician (non-party, previously FDP ).

Pierre Maudet's parents are Henri Maudet, a Frenchman from the Sarthe department (* 1948) who first studied theology in Paris before moving to Geneva and becoming a lawyer, and Susanna Willy (* 1943), who worked as a teacher. Maudet completed his Matura with Latin and Greek at the Collège Claparède in Conches near Geneva. Until March 2006, he studied at the bilingual law faculty of the University of Freiburg , where he obtained his master's degree . From 1997 to 2007 he was a consultant in a communications office. In the military he is a captain in the rescue troops . He is married and has three children. Maudet is a dual Swiss-French citizen. From the beginning of 2018 to the end of January 2019 he wrote a bi-weekly column called “Voice from Geneva” in the newspaper Blick .

Maudet is the founder of the youth parliament of the city of Geneva. From 1993 to 1995 he was its president. On March 28, 1999 he was elected to the Conseil municipal (city parliament). There he was Vice-President from 2006 to 2007. From 2003 to 2005 he was President of the Parti radical (PR) (Liberal Party) of the city of Geneva. He was then president of the cantonal party from 2005 to 2007. In January 2005, Federal Councilor Pascal Couchepin appointed Maudet President of the Federal Commission for Children and Young People (EKKJ), where he remained until 2015.

On April 29, 2007 he was elected as Conseiller administratif (member of the city government). He took over the Département de l'environnement urbain et de la sécurité (DEUS) (Environment and Safety Department). During his tenure, he helped to hire more Agents de la Police Municipale (city police officers) and give them more important skills. He also equipped the city of Geneva with a Wi-Fi network. He served as Mayor of Geneva from June 2011 to May 2012 ( French Maire de Genève ).

After Mark Muller's resignation , he was the only candidate proposed for successor by the PLR ​​(FDP) in 2012. In the replacement election of June 2012, he was elected to the Geneva State Council ( Conseil d'Etat ). He became head of the Département de la sécurité - DS (Security Department).

In November 2013, Maudet was re-elected in the second ballot with 59,057 votes out of 112,750. As the only candidate for the Conseil d'Etat (government council), he achieved an absolute majority (52.38%).

In the new legislative period, Maudet also took over the economic department. He is responsible for the Département de la Sécurité et de l'Économie - DSE (Security and Economic Department). For two years (2013–2015) he was Vice-President of the Conseil d'Etat (Councilor). During his tenure, he implemented several important reforms, such as the Loi sur la police - LPol (Police Act), the Loi sur les taxis et les véhicules de transport avec chauffeurs (LTVTC) (Taxis and Vehicles-with-Drivers Act) and the Loi sur la restauration, le débit de boissons, l'hébergement et le divertissement (LRDBHD) (Restoration, Drinking, Accommodation and Entertainment Act).

In 2017 he presented the Opération Papyrus to the press to regularize the residence status of illegal immigrants, so-called sans-papiers , in the canton of Geneva.

Maudet ran in the 2017 Federal Council election , where he was defeated by Ignazio Cassis . Maudet received 90 votes in the second ballot and Ignazio Cassis 125.

Trip to Abu Dhabi in 2015

On August 30, 2018, the Geneva public prosecutor announced its intention to investigate Maudet for taking advantage of a controversial trip to Abu Dhabi paid for by the royal family of the United Arab Emirates , and requested that his immunity be lifted. On local television, Maudet apologized for having "hidden part of the truth" in connection with the trip. Before that, the government council withdrew some of his duties from him. On September 13, 2018, Maudet provisionally waived pressure from government colleagues on the Geneva regional council. The State Council also withdrew his responsibility for the airport and the police.

On November 23, 2018, the FDP President Petra Gössi said: "With this behavior, Pierre Maudet has jeopardized his credibility and the population's trust in politics is suffering" and: "If I were Maudet, I would have resigned long ago". On December 3, 2018, the board of the Geneva-based FDP also called on Pierre Maudet to resign with 21 to 7 votes.

The management of the FDP of the canton of Geneva excluded him from the party by resolution of July 6, 2020. Maudet declined to appeal. According to the statutes of the FDP Switzerland, membership in the cantonal party expires with membership in the Swiss party.
