Tiptonville is the administrative seat of Lake County in the northwest of the US -amerikanischen state of Tennessee . The city of 2,439 residents is located between the Mississippi and Reelfoot Lake . The city was founded in 1857.

Tiptonville is the birthplace of musician Carl Perkins and former Commandant of the Marine Corps Clifton B. Cates .

During the American Civil War , the city was the site of the defeat of Confederate troops in the Battle of Island Number Ten in 1862 . Three miles north of Tiptonville, on State Route 22 , there is now a memorial to that battle, while the then contested island has now completely disappeared due to the erosion of the Mississippi.

Tiptonville is located at latitude 36 ° 22 ′ 39 ″ north and longitude 89 ° 28 ′ 34 ″ west on a small elevation known as the Tiptonville Dome . This is in the middle of the New Madrid Seismic Zone , which was made famous by the New Madrid earthquake of 1811 . The city area is 3.7 km².

Demographics

In the 2000 census, the population was 2,439. These were distributed over 918 households in 570 families. The population density was 658.5 // km². There were 992 buildings, which corresponds to a density of 267.8 / km².

The population in 2000 was 62.57% white , 36.16% African American , 0.33% Native American , 0.08% Asian and 0.12% other. 0.74% said they came from at least two of these groups. 0.82% of the population were Hispanics belonging to any of the above groups.

20.7% were under 18 years of age, 9.4% between 18 and 24, 28.3% between 25 and 44, 23.2% between 45 and 64 and 18.4% 65 and older. The average age was 40 years. Statistically, there were 102.7 men for every 100 women, 103.9 for those over 18 years of age.

The median income was $ 19,475 and the median family income was $ 24,929. The average income for men was $ 25,089 and that for women was $ 18,333. The per capita income was $ 11,843. Around 21.1% of families and 26.5% of the total population had their income below the poverty line.
