Tissaluk [ ˈtˢisːaluk ] (according to the old spelling Tigssaluk ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the Paamiut district in the Sermersooq commune .

location

Tissaluk is located in front of a mountain of the same name on the small Taartoq fjord on a peninsula between the Sermiligaarsuk and Tissaluup Ilua fjords . Tissaluk is located 80 km southeast of Paamiut and 32 km northwest of Arsuk .

history

It is said that 22 people lived in Tissaluk at the end of the 18th century. Later the place was an Udsted . For the time being, nothing is known other than that the residents were constantly borrowing money from the Udsteds administrator, which was eventually banned. In 1906 the Udsted was given up. The reason given was that the residents were too unable to hunt and the hunting grounds were bad anyway. The residents were distributed to surrounding areas.

In 1931 it was proposed in Grønlands Landsråd that Tissaluk should be repopulated. In 1934 the local council in Arsuk said that the area should be used by the residents of Arsuk for sheep farming. They didn't want people from Paamiut, which is much further away, to settle there. After discussions, the residents of Arsuk abandoned the plan to use Tissaluk for sheep farming as it seemed that the people there would not be able to survive without additional hunting. But Tissaluk was never repopulated from any other side either.
