Kuannit [ kuˈanːitˢʰ ] (according to the old spelling Kuánit , also Avigaat , Danish Kvaneø ) is a desolate Greenlandic settlement in the Paamiut district in the Sermersooq municipality .

location

Kuannit is located in a small bay in the southwest of an island of the same name at the exit of the Qassit fjord . Paamiut is 27 km south.

history

Kuannit was founded in 1868 when the Udsted Avigaat was relocated three kilometers to the northeast. The place name was taken with it, so that Kuannit continued to be called Avigaat, although the old Avigaat was not given up during the resettlement, but continued to exist as a place to live. To distinguish it, Kuannit was named after the island on which it was now located. This island with the Danish name Kvaneø , which was partly used as a Danish name for the settlement, bears the same name as the island on which Kangilineq is located in the same district , which also bears the Danish surname Kvaneø .

From 1911 Kuannit was the capital of the Avigaat community within the Frederikshaab colonial district, which also included the Avigaat and Qeqertarsuaq residential areas . It was part of the 7th Provincial Council constituency of South Greenland.

In 1918 Kuannit had 60 inhabitants, most of whom were of pure Greenland origin. Among them was the Udsteds administrator and a catechist and eight hunters. In addition to ten Greenlandic houses, some of which were well built, some of which were extremely poor, there was an apartment in Kuannit for the Udsteds administrator from 1867 with three rooms and a shop on the top floor. In 1870 a bacon house with provisions warehouse was built. There was also a cooperage in Kuannit and a powder house built as a peat wall house.

It was not until 1922 that Kuannit received a school band. In addition, the place received a new shop and fish house in the 1920s. In 1939 the Udsteds administrator received a new house. Between 1930 and 1950 the population was around 100 people.

In 1950 Kuannit was incorporated into the Paamiut community . In 1960, 103 people lived in Kuannit. In 1970 it was 79 and in 1980 it was 49.

Population development

Around 1980 around 50 people were still living in Kuannit. In 1984, however, all residents suddenly left the place, which has been deserted since then.
