Iluilaarsuk [ iluiˈlɑːsːuk ] (according to the old spelling Iluilârssuk ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the Paamiut district in the Sermersooq commune .

location

Iluilaarsuk is located on a tiny headland, which lies with some offshore islands directly on the Labrador Sea . 22 km northwest is Paamiut .

history

In the 18th century Otto Fabricius worked as a missionary in Iluilaarsuk, where he also collected his knowledge about Greenland, which he recorded in his scientific works.

It is said that by the end of the 18th century there were already 34 people living in Iluilaarsuk. The next mention comes from the year 1840.

From 1911 Iluilaarsuk belonged to the municipality of Frederikshaab. In 1918 there were 52 people living in eight Greenland houses. There was a school chapel built in 1897 with an area of almost 18 m², which was built as a peat wall house with internal wood paneling. An unskilled catechist taught there. Among the residents were six hunters and two fishermen who made their living mainly by hunting seals.

In 1929 the place received a new school chapel. Until 1950, a maximum of 125 people lived in Iluilaarsuk. In 1950 Iluilaarsuk was incorporated into the new Paamiut community . In 1960 the residential area still had 86 inhabitants, but it was given up in 1962.
