Narsalik [ ˈnɑsːalik ] (according to the old spelling Narssalik ) is a desolate Greenlandic settlement in the Paamiut district in the Sermersooq commune .

location

Narsalik is located on the north coast of a rugged island of the same name at the mouth of the Sermilik . From Narsalik it is 42 km north to Paamiut and 71 km southeast to Arsuk .

history

At the end of the 18th century, 128 people lived near Narsalik. The place was officially founded as Udsted around 1840 . The place consisted of three parts of the settlement. In the northern part there were some houses, a provisions store and a bacon house. In the middle part there were a few houses, but the apartment of the Udsteds administrator and the chapel. The southern part was built exclusively with residential houses.

From 1911 Narsalik was a separate community within the colonial district of Frederikshaab, to which Neria still belonged. It was part of the 6th District Council of South Greenland.

In 1918 there were 126 people living in Narsalik who lived in 19 houses. Some have been described as so miserable "as could hardly be imagined". As usual, they were peat-walled houses, but the ground was so swampy that there were stepping stones and boards in the houses so that one wouldn't sink into the ground. The bedding was poor and people only had a bucket that acted as a toilet, a saucepan and kettle for making coffee, which were heated on a fireplace with driftwood or heather .

The Udsteds administrator's apartment was from 1879. It had two rooms, a kitchen and an attic. The bacon house was built in 1871 and was around 40 m² in size. The provisions store also served as a cooperage and had a shop on the top floor. All three buildings were made of stone. There was also a powder house and a goat shed. The school chapel was around 50 m² in size and had a very high ceiling of 2.86 m. The classroom was in the attic. The school chapel was staffed by a trained catechist and a midwife. The inhabitants lived mainly from seal hunts and to a lesser extent from hunting reindeer. Among them were 24 hunters and one fisherman.

In 1920 Narsalik got a new shop and a fish house. In the 1930s two more fish houses and a new apartment were built for the Udsteds administrator. After the Second World War, Narsalik received a new school band. Until 1950 the population remained constant at a good 100 people. In 1950 Narsalik was incorporated into the Paamiut community . In 1960 85 people lived in the village and in 1970 73.
