Kangilineq [ kaˈŋilinɜq ] (according to the old spelling Kangilineĸ ) is a deserted Greenlandic settlement in the Paamiut district in the Sermersooq commune .

location

Kangilineq is located on the eastern tip of an elongated island of the same name in the mouth of the Kuannersooq (Kvanefjord). Paamiut is relatively close twelve kilometers northwest.

history

It is said that 50 people lived in the fjord towards the end of the 18th century, but it is unknown whether it was Kangilineq. The place has been populated since 1840 at the latest.

From 1911 Kangilineq was a part of the municipality of Frederikshaab. In 1918, 88 people lived in Kangilineq, who lived in 15 houses. There was a 40 m² stone school chapel with an altar, kneeling bench, sermon desk and baptismal font. The classroom was three feet wide and was led by a trained catechist. A midwife also worked in the chapel. Among the residents were eight hunters and four fishermen who made their living mainly from sealing seals.

Between 1918 and 1950 the population rose to a maximum of 125 people, but averaged around 100 people. In 1950 Kangilineq was incorporated into the new Paamiut community. In 1950, 105 people lived in Kangilineq. In 1960 there were still 86. In 1963 the residential space was given up.
