Avigaat [ aviɣaːtˢʰ ] (according to the old spelling Avigait ) is a desolate Greenlandic settlement in the Paamiut district in the Sermersooq commune .

location

Avigaat is located on a tiny island in the archipelago at the exit of the Qassit . Avigaat is 26 km north of Paamiut .

history

Avigaat was settled before 1860 and was originally an Udsted . In 1868 the Udsted was relocated about three kilometers to the northeast due to the poor port conditions, where it was given the name Kuannit for the purpose of differentiation . The original place remained as a living space.

From 1911 Avigaat belonged to the municipality of the same name based on Udsted.

In 1918 there were 37 inhabitants who lived mainly from the seal hunt. Among them were three hunters and a fisherman and a catechist. They lived in five houses. The residential space was finally given up around 1925.
