Neria [ nɜʁiˈa ] (according to the old spelling Neria ) is a desolate, fallen Greenlandic settlement in the Paamiut district in the Sermersooq commune .

location

Neria is located on the south coast of an island of the same name . The Tunorput Sound , which separates the island of Neria from the mainland, flows into the Neria fjord directly in front of the village . Paamiut is 51 km northwest and Arsuk 61 km southeast.

history

Neria was settled before 1840. From 1911 Neria belonged to the municipality of Narsalik. In 1918 there were 112 people at the living space, who lived in 16 houses. There was a stone school chapel, about 32 m² in size, with a 2.5 m wide classroom that was separated by a double door. In the chapel there was an altar, a sermon desk and an organ, and an unskilled catechist and a reader worked in it. There were 16 hunters and one fisherman among the inhabitants and they made a living by hunting seals, reindeer and foxes.

In 1936 a new school chapel was built in Neria and in 1944 the place received a fish house. Fishing was flourishing and each fisherman caught an average of more than ten tons of fish a year. The population was constant at around 100 in the first half of the 20th century. 1950 Neria was incorporated into the municipality of Paamiut . In 1960, 93 people lived in Neria, but in 1966 the last residents left the place, which has since been deserted.
