background

The album was recorded on July 6, 1979 in Copenhagen by a trio consisting of Stéphane Grappelli, violin, Joe Pass on guitar and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen on bass. reception

Rick Anderson wrote on Allmusic : “But it is difficult to imagine another musician, regardless of his or her virtuosity, who always has the same sense of swing and simple joie de vivre that Grappelli conveys with practically every note. It also doesn't hurt that his companions on this album are among the best in their field; Orsted Pedersen plays with a firmness and rhythmic force, enough to make you forget the lack of a drummer, while Pass effortlessly slides back and forth between unobtrusive backup chords and brilliant solo playing ... Highly recommended. "

Richard Cook and Brian Morton gave the album the highest rating, describing it as “a superb set. Grappelli's interpretations (...) confirm his talent as an improviser and also his ability to tackle sugar-sweet topics with the appropriate hint of spiciness ”.

Individual evidence

  1. Review at allmusic
  2. But it's hard to imagine another player, regardless of virtuosity, ever conveying the same sense of swing and simple joie de vivre that Grappelli does with virtually every note. Nor does it hurt that his accompanists on this album are among the finest in their fields; Orsted Pedersen plays with a solidity and rhythmic power that are enough to make you forget the absence of a drummer, while Pass slides effortlessly between unobtrusive chordal backup and bravura soloing… Highly recommended.
