Tobias Brandes (born March 5, 1966 in Braunschweig ; † February 2, 2017 in Berlin ) was a German physicist and university professor .

Life

Brandes began studying physics at the Technical University of Braunschweig in 1985 . He moved to the University of Göttingen and completed his diploma thesis Functional Integral Theory for Nonlinear Polaron Transport under Wilhelm Zwerger , with which he graduated in 1990. This started his work on time-dependent effects in quantum transport.

In 1992 he returned to Braunschweig to work in the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) with Bernhard Kramer on inelastic processes in quantum transport. In particular, he investigated the phonon scattering in quantum wires and the inelastic scattering in the integer quantum Hall effect . He moved with Bernhard Kramer to the University of Hamburg , which received his doctorate in 1994 with the dissertation Aspects of inelastic processes in quantum transport . He then worked as a post-doc at the Dicke Superradianz with Arisato Kawabata and then with Akira Shimizu in Tokyo , where he also met his wife. Back in Hamburg, he worked with Bernhard Kramer on quantum optical topics and on the electron- phonon interaction in quantum dots . He also completed his habilitation .

In 2000, Brandes was appointed lecturer at the University of Manchester . His investigations into quantum transport and super radiancy led him to the quantum phase transitions . In 2006 he was appointed professor at the Technical University of Berlin , where he set up a working group with a broad field of work at the Institute for Theoretical Physics. The generalization of the Second Law of Thermodynamics also belonged to the work areas . For noise reduction has been feedback control used.

Brandes was married and had a son (* 2009).
