biography

Weichberger was the son of the painter and ceramic artist Heide Weichberger (1922–1980). His half-brother from his mother's earlier marriage to the writer Gustav Schenk was the writer Johannes Schenk , who later made a special contribution to the appreciation of Tobias Weichberger's artistic work.

Weichberger spent his childhood in Worpswede. In 1971 he began studying at the Bremen University of Design (now the Bremen University of the Arts ). He finished his studies in 1978 at the Berlin University of Fine Arts (today Berlin University of the Arts ). In 1980 he returned to Worpswede. In addition to painting in oil, he increasingly devoted himself to the technique of collage . Since 1977 his works have been exhibited in various German galleries.

Among his better-known works include the series My Madame's , a series of about 40 large-size female files that were created between 1989 and 1990. The Madames were painted in watercolor and chalk on wrapping paper and then drawn up on wood while damp. The drying process gave the works a special, three-dimensional surface structure. Donata Holz wrote about this in the Weser-Kurier : “Tobias Weichberger's naked beauties, which arouse associations with Japanese woodcuts, present themselves lying down, turn their backs on us, or can be observed while they are grooming themselves. Sometimes they have an accessory such as a towel, a sponge or a flower in their hands. ”In many of Weichberger's drawings and etchings, numbers and letters play an important role, whereby. however, the "M" and the "W" are always missing. Weichberger told many different stories about this, but always left his audience in the dark about the real reason.

In 1989 he was awarded the Osterholz district's cultural sponsorship award.
In 1993 the Bremervörde cultural and homeland district dedicated a memorial exhibition to him.
In 2007, the former sponsor and friend of Weichberger's Johann Weber donated nine of Weichberger's etchings to the Bremervörde art library. .

In 1998, Weichberger left life voluntarily.
