Tom Buckley (journalist)

Thomas Floyd Schofield Buckley (born January 2, 1928 in Chatham , New York , † November 19, 2015 in Manhattan , New York City ) was an American journalist , literary and film critic .

Life

Tom Buckley was born in 1928 to the dancer Juliet Sparks and the actor Floyd Buckley, who was 18 years his senior . He grew up in Queens , precisely in Beechhurst. After graduating from Bayside High School, he studied at Columbia University . He served twice in the United States Army : once shortly after World War II and once during the Korean War .

As a runner he started working for the New York Times in 1953 . In 1962 he became a correspondent for the United Nations . From 1966 to June 1968 he worked for the Times in their Saigon branch , from where he reported on the Tet Offensive . After his return he became a permanent member of the editorial team. In the 1970s, for example, he wrote the About New York column and reviews of films and books. After leaving the Times in 1982, he wrote for the New Yorker and Esquire, among others .

On November 19, 2015, Buckley died of lung cancer at his Manhattan home at the age of 87 .
