Tom Jones (born February 17, 1928 in Littlefield , Texas ) is an American musical writer. He was recognized as the author of books on musicals such as The Fantasticks and I Do! I do! known.

Life

Jones was born in Littlefield, Texas in 1928 to hatchery worker William T. and Jessie Jones. Jones met musical composer Harvey Schmidt at the University of Texas at Austin . Schmidt began accompanying acting students on the piano for Jones. A short time later, the two began writing musicals. The first published piece was a revue .

Jones' most important work is the musical The Fantasticks, which was performed 17,162 times off-Broadway between 1960 and 2002 . In 1992 Jones received a Tony Honors for Excellence in Theater award for The Fantasticks .

The next successful musicals by the Schmidt / Jones team in 1963 were 110 in the Shade (330 performances, nominated for the Tony Award in the composer and lyricist category ) and I Do! I do! (1966, 560 Broadway performances, German: ... until death do us part ).

Jones married author Elinor Wright on June 1, 1963. After a divorce, he married the choreographer Janet Watson on June 21, 1984. Jones has two sons, Sam and Michael, and lives in West Cornwall, Connecticut .
