Thomas "Tom" McIntosh (born February 6, 1927 in Baltimore , Maryland , † July 26, 2017 in Boston , Massachusetts ) was an American jazz trombonist, composer and arranger of hard bop .

Life

Tom McIntosh studied singing at the Peabody Conservatory in 1944 , then learned to play the trombone, and graduated from the Juilliard School of Music in 1958 . From 1956 he worked as a professional musician, played in 1959 with James Moody , 1960 in the Art Farmer / Benny Golson -Jazztet, then again from 1962 with Moody and from 1964 in the New York Jazz Sextet . From 1966 McIntosh worked in the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Big Band , in 1968 he played with Dizzy Gillespie at the Berlin Jazz Days. In the late 1960s he moved to the west coast and concentrated on composing for film and television. He returned to the east coast in the 199s and began a career as a music educator and director of the Thelonious Monk Institute at the New England Conservatory of Music . In 2003 he presented his first album under his own name, With Malice Towards None .

In 2008 he received the NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship .
