Tomas Bunk

Tomas Maria "Tom" Bunk (born December 17, 1945 in Split , Croatia ) is a cartoonist , painter and illustrator .

Life

Bunk is the son of the painter and set designer Rudolf G. Bunk and his wife Marianne geb. Horl. He studied stage design and fine arts in Hamburg. In 1973 he moved to Berlin, married and began to paint strange subjects in oil . After three successful exhibitions, he turned to drawing comics and was part of the German underground comix scene from 1976 onwards . In Germany he drew for Carlsen , Ravensburger , Volksverlag and Semmel-Verlach .

His cartoons and comics, whose style is reminiscent of Robert Crumb , Gilbert Shelton and Gerhard Seyfried , appeared for five years in the satirical magazine Pardon , in other comic books (e.g. Rad ab ! , Zomix and Hinz and Kunz with Volker Reiche and Bernd Pfarr ) and anthologies. In 1983 he moved to New York and started working for RAW magazine , edited by Francoise Mouly and Art Spiegelman . From 1984 he also worked with Art Spiegelman on the Garbage Pail Kids . He is drawing with Harvey Kurtzman on a Kurtzman adventure book. Since 1990 he has been a regular draftsman for MAD magazine , illustrating school books and producing covers and illustrations for children's books. In 2008 he published his biographical comic A Berliner in New York in the FAZ and has several Quantoons exhibitions in Frankfurt and Dortmund and was involved in a comic exhibition in the Jewish Museum in Berlin and in a traveling comic exhibition. He also paints weird and surreal oil paintings and graphics.

In 2015 he was awarded PENG! For his life's work at the Munich comic festival . - The Munich Comic Prize awarded. In 2019 he received a Reuben Award from the National Cartoonists Society in the Newspaper & Magazine Illustration category.

Tomas Bunk lives in New Rochelle , New York with his second wife and two children .
