Tomoko Kawase

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tomoko Kawase ( Japanese 川 瀬 智子 Kawase Tomoko , born February 6, 1975 in Kyoto Prefecture , Japan ) is a Japanese musician and singer in the band The Brilliant Green .

Life

Since 2001 she has been active alone under the pseudonyms Tommy February 6 and Tommy Heavenly 6 and has since released a total of eight studio albums . In 2003 she founded the girl group Tommy ☆ Angels , although she was not a member of the group herself, but only appeared as a producer.

Some of her songs got a role as the opening or ending of various series. Her song Papermoon was performed in the Japanese manga series Soul Eater.

After her marriage to her bandmate Shunsaku Okuda on November 22, 2003, she officially changed her name to Tomoko Okuda ( 奥 田智子 Okuda Tomoko ), but in most cases she is still listed as Tomoko Kawase.

The Brilliant Green

After being active as a singer in her self-founded cover band, including covering Japanese groups such as Flipper's Guitar and Pizzicato Five , Tomoko Kawase founded the band The Brilliant Green in March 1995 together with guitarist Shunsaku Okuda and bassist Ryō Matsui . Just two months after their founding, they got a record deal with Sony , but it was still over two years before their first singles - with still moderate success - were released. It wasn't until their third release in 1998, There Will Be Love There , that they had their breakthrough and their first number 1 hit in Japan. The following singles and albums were also more successful, but over the years public interest in the group decreased significantly. After their last album The Winter Album , The Brilliant Green finally took a creative break in 2002.

After almost five years of inactivity, Stand By Me was released in May 2007 . Shortly thereafter, two more single releases followed, Enemy and Ash Like Snow , but all of them were only moderately successful and did not come close to their great successes in 1998 and 1999. It was only with the compilation album '97 -'08 that they made it back to the top of the Japanese charts. In addition, another studio album was announced for 2008.

Solo career

Shortly before the temporary separation from The Brilliant Green, Kawase started her first solo project. In Tommy February 6 is a specially created by Kawase art figure, which as noticeable by most innocent behavior and naive lyrics by a very conservative, partially streber stick appearance. So she usually wears very simple and hardly provocative dresses and skirts, colorful glasses in different variations and she only colors her hair in different shades of red. Originally, however, the character was not created with these characteristics, much more "developed" into this appearance over time. The February 6 project quickly got bored with Kawase, and she began to see it as a definite failure, which is why she created a new fictional character.

Kawase's second created character Tommy Heavenly 6 is a kind of alter ego of Tommy February 6 , which is not only reflected in the polarizing appearance in the punk style, but also in the significantly changed music style. While February 6 almost exclusively produced synth-pop , Heavenly 6's music is designed for different variations of alternative rock . Kawase did not see this new character and style as a replacement and a new start, but rather as a further development of its predecessor. The fact that both Tommy February 6 and Tommy Heavenly 6 released two albums and eight singles each over the years and the resumption of activities by The Brilliant Green suggest that both Kawase projects have now been completed.

In addition to her two solo projects, Kawase was also active as a producer several times. Among other things, she wrote the song ♥ Wanna Be Your Girlfriend ♥ for Asuka Hinoi and produced the double A single Walking in the Rain / Stars To Shine Again for the pop group Speed .

Tommy ☆ Angels

Tommy ☆ Angels is a girl group founded by Kawase in 2003. At that time the group consisted exclusively of female members, averaging fifteen years of age. Despite a major marketing campaign, the single You'll Be My Boy , released on December 17, 2003, was their only release to date. Tommy ☆ Angels were never officially dissolved - their official website is still active - but it can now be assumed that the group has ceased its activities.
