Tomoyo After - It's a Wonderful Life ( Japanese 智 代 ア フ タ ー ~ It's a Wonderful Life ~ ) is a Ren'ai adventure developed by Key for Windows - a specifically Japanese version of an adventure game . It continues the plot from Clannad with an alternate ending, in which Tomoya Okazaki and Tomoyo Sakagami begin to develop a romantic relationship after graduating from high school.

action

At the beginning of the plot, Tomoya Okazaki ( 岡 崎 朋 也 ) is already in the middle of life and works at the garbage disposal . Initially alone and moved out of his hated father's apartment, he still maintains a close relationship with Tomoyo. So he still meets with her more often and they both develop a romantic relationship with each other. One day it turns out that Tomoyo has a younger half-sister named Tomo Mishima ( 三島 と も ), who previously lived with her mother. Tomo, who is still in kindergarten, is the illegitimate child of Tomoyo's father and another woman by the name of Yūko Mishima ( 三島 有 子 ). Since Tomo's mother suffers from psychological problems, Tomo has to stay in Tomoya's apartment. Tomoyo is particularly fond of her half-sister because of her big heart for children.

In addition, there is Takafumi Sakagami ( 坂 上 鷹 文 ), the younger brother of Tomoyo who is skilled in handling technical matters and who moves into the apartment during the course of the story. When Takafumi's ex-girlfriend, Kanako ( 河南 子 ), settles in Tomoya's apartment after an argument with her mother, the chaos is perfect and various paths of action develop.

Game mechanics

Tomoyo After requires little interaction with the player, since he is busy most of the time following the displayed and optionally spoken texts. These represent either dialogues or the inner thoughts of the protagonists. Again and again, the player arrives at a “decision point” where he can choose from several options (usually two or three) to influence the course of the action. The time intervals between such queries vary from a few seconds to several minutes. The aim of the game is to find a way or a desired ending that is satisfactory for the player himself, whereby in the original version hentai scenes could be "unlocked" in which Tomoya is involved with Tomoyo.

An unusual feature for previous Ren'ai adventures has been added, which was named Dungeons & Takafumis based on Dungeons & Dragons . In these special rounds, Tomoyo After changes to a perspective that is usual for role-playing games such as Final Fantasy . In order to complete the game, the player must complete eight of these mini-games, after which other possible scenarios are activated.

Emergence

The game was developed after the release of Clannad , when Key gave its employees the opportunity to implement their own idea as a game. Jun Maeda had the idea to build a game based on the scenario of Tomoyo in Clannad . Together with Leo Kashida , a new employee at Key, he designed the plot of the adventure and took over the planning of the project.

As in Planetarian: Chiisana Hoshi no Yume , Fumio took over the artistic direction and was supported by Itaru Hinoue , the former artistic director of the games Kanon , Air and Clannad , with the character design . As a result, although the figures were taken from Clannad , they differ in style.

As head of the project, Jun Maeda also participated in the production of the game's music, which was composed and arranged mainly by Shinji Orito and Magome Togoshi . The latter contributed to all of the works previously developed by Key and gave them their typical but atmospheric background music.

When the game was ported to the PlayStation 2 , some parts of the game were revised again. For example, the hentai scenes that were not permitted for game consoles were removed and replaced by additional adult-free scenes. Newly inserted plot sections were worked out by the original development team and parts of the new plot by Takafumi and Kanako were written by Yūto Tonokawa . The revision extended the playing time by about half of the previous season.

Publications

The game was first released in a limited edition on November 25, 2005 in a version for the PC on DVD . Like the first edition of Kanon , this version was sold together with the original soundtrack from the game Tomoyo After Original Soundtrack . But also the subsequent normal version of the game appeared in a limited edition and makes it the only game from Key that is no longer produced.

The game was ported to the PlayStation 2 by Prototype and was released on January 25, 2007 under the title Tomoyo After - It's a Wonderful Life CS Edition . Visual Art's motto (Prototype) also ported the game to mobile phones that support FOMA . This version, released on June 2, 2008, did not contain any of the role-playing elements. On March 19, 2009 Prototype released another port of the "CS Edition" to PlayStation Portable , which also contains voice output for all characters.

Manga

The manga Tomoyo After - Dear Shining Memories ( 智 代 ア フ タ ー〜Dear Shining Memories〜), drawn by Yukiko Sumiyoshi ( 住 吉 文 子 ), tells the story from Tomoyo's perspective.

It was published from April 20, 2007 to October 20, 2007 by Fujimi Shobo within the manga magazine Dragon Age Pure . The manga was published in bound form as a four-chapter tankōbon on December 6, 2007.
