Angel Beats! ( Japanese. エ ン ジ ェ ル ビ ー ツ! , Enjeru Bītsu! ) is a Japanese media franchise from 2009 and 2010, the concept of which was developed by Jun Maeda from the game developer Key . The series includes a light novel series, a television anime by director Seiji Kishi , which was created in the animation studio PA Works in cooperation with Aniplex , as well as two manga . The stories take place in an in-between world in which young people are reborn after a tragic death in order to complete an open deed or to find their peace.

action

scenario

The story of Angel Beats! takes place in a fictional intermediate world borrowed from Buddhism , which is roughly comparable to the purgatory . In this world, which is represented as a large school complex, young people who perished under particularly tragic circumstances are "reborn". The real meaning behind this world is that the young people stay there until they have found their inner peace or a worthy balance for their previous life. However, this world also has some special features and shares a lot in common with a virtual world . So it is not possible for the characters to die, weapons can be created out of nothing and many of the classmates behave like non-player characters (NPCs).

In the center of the events is the student Otonashi, who enlightened in retrospect about his past. At the same time, his life and the resulting events are used as a framework plot, which, as the viewer only later becomes clear, has decisively influenced the entire plot. In the end, many relationships are very different from what Otonashi experiences and the viewer is presented with. This leads to numerous misunderstandings that contribute to the actual explosiveness of the plot.

Chronological representation

Chronologically speaking, Otonashi had a normal childhood, but is confronted with his seriously ill younger sister, who is confined to bed. He takes care of them self-sacrificingly, and it gradually becomes his purpose in life to support his sister, who never complains, as best as possible. However, there is no hope for them as a necessary organ donor cannot be found. So he fulfills her wish to kidnap her from the hospital for Christmas to show her the beauty of the Christmas market again. However, while he is still happily carrying her on his back, she dies. With her death he loses his life's work and goes through a severe depression, but manages to find courage and plans to start studying medicine. However, while traveling on the subway, a fateful incident occurs in which both he and several other survivors are buried. So begins a long time of waiting, during which Otonashi both loses a patient and, bleeding profusely internally, succumbs to his wounds shortly before being rescued. Before that, he was able to encourage other survivors and convince them to fill out their organ donation card. As a pioneer, he too filled out this ID with the last of his strength.

Unknowingly, with his heart still intact, he saved Kanade Tachibana's life. However, he does not know anything about it and wakes up with no memory of his past in the seemingly strange intermediate world. There he meets Yuri, who is armed with a sniper rifle and who seems to be hunting an innocent girl. Unable to understand his situation, he asks the girl , who is known as an “angel” ( 天使 , Tenshi ), whether he is really dead, as Yuri tried to explain to him. Then he is stabbed by her. This is also the key scene for the end of the plot, because Tenshi is Kanade Tachibana, who was saved by him. With the stab through the heart, she realizes that Otonashi must be her former savior. However, she is silent.

Some time later Otonashi regains consciousness in the infirmary and finally has to realize that he obviously cannot die in this world. In search of an adult, he comes across the headmaster's room, but is "killed" again by a trap that has been set up. When he comes to, he finds himself in the middle of a consultation with the SSS (abbreviation for Shinda Sekai Sensen , 死 ん だ 世界 戦 線 , dt. "Front line of the world of the dead"), in which he meets Yuri again. There it is made clear to him that he was probably killed in an accident and, like the others, is stuck in this non-real world, which they do not want to leave. At the same time they confront him with the idea of being a lower animal such as B. a shell to be reborn. Fearing this, the troops under Yuri prepare to oppose Tenshi, taking advantage of the system's weaknesses. For example, the girls' band Girls Dead Monster , which belongs to the SSS, regularly gives concerts in front of the NPCs in order to steal their food stamps in a joint action. Tenshi keeps getting in their way, which they use brutal force to prevent them from getting to the crime scene.

The SSS obtains its weapons from an underground guild, in which a squad led by Chaa produces the weapons and ammunition. However, the members of the guild only manage to make weapons that they have seen before and can still remember from their last life. The guild is protected by an ingenious system of traps, which is also the undoing of the members of the SSS on their first visit with Otonashi when they want to get supplies. Contrary to the agreement, the traps were not deactivated because Tenshi was also looking for the guild. With the exception of Otonashi and Yuri, all members perish on the way to the guild, but this is not a major problem due to their immortality. However, the guild is tracked down by Tenshi and they see themselves forced to destroy the guild with explosive charges. Then they start rebuilding not far from the first guild.

In the further course, Otonashi comes into contact with many of the members of the SSS and, together with them, goes through further confrontations with Tenshi, which, however, are not necessarily carried out with armed force, but sometimes also sporty and tricky. In doing so, Otonashi must make the statement that those who can fulfill their dreams will disappear. In particular, Kanade was deposed as head girl, which involuntarily leads Otonashi to overcome the misunderstanding barrier between the SSS and Tenshi. So he ultimately has to realize that Kanade is not a bad person or even an enemy. As it turns out at the end of the series, it is precisely this closeness to Tenshi that brings his memories back to him. So both even decide to work together to ensure that the others get their dreams come true. After all, the conflict is based only on a misunderstanding about the meaning of this world, which consists in the fact that those “punished” in their last life can happily find their peace. In this way, they succeed in gradually fulfilling these wishes and convincing those who remain of them. Ultimately, only Otonashi and Kanade are left alone. This is when Kanade decides to let Otonashi know about it, knowing that she will also disappear after thanking him for his donation. Ultimately, Otonashi remains alone and indignant about the disappearance of his love in the intermediate world.

After the credits of the last episode, however, it is implied that Kanade and Otonashi will meet again in the next life. Otonashi recognizes her standing by the roadside, as she hums the song My Song , which was sung by Iwasawa in the third episode, and reaches for her shoulder.

Characters

main characters

Otonashi ( 音 無 結 弦 , Otonashi Yuzuru )
Otonashi is the protagonist of Angel Beats! who lost memories of his past after his death. Otonashi thus follows the typical pattern of a protagonist from a Ren'ai adventure by Key . After his awakening in the parallel world, also a typical element in the actions and stories of Jun Maeda, he is involuntarily drawn into the organization SSS and its "fight against God".
In the seventh episode of Angel Beats! he regains his memories through Ayato's hypnosis skills and also has to look back on a sad past. In his past, he genuinely cared for his younger sister, who was in the hospital for a long time. He tried to support her as much as possible and she became the center of his life and source of his strength to lead an otherwise unpleasant life. However, she dies happily when he carries her on his back to the Christmas market. After her death, he wandered aimlessly for a while, but eventually found courage and began studying medicine. Tragically, he was hit by a train accident at precisely this point. He finds himself in a subway tunnel with a few other survivors, and a long wait begins for help. He takes over the organization and manages to morally strengthen the other survivors and gives their lives a meaning after he makes the decision to provide his body for organ donations and they follow him. Ultimately, they are released, but help comes too late for Otonashi, who has suffered internal injuries.
In contrast to the other characters, Na-Ga had a free hand in the design of Otonashi, as he did not receive any requirements from Maeda.
Yuri ( 仲 村 ゆ り , Nakamura Yuri )
Yuri, also known as Yurippe ( ゆ り っ ぺ ), is a girl with a very dominant and purposeful personality. She was the first person to defy the will of Tenshi and therefore easily became the leader of the SSS. Flashbacks reveal that she lost her three siblings in a robbery by intruders. She herself was given the task of looking for valuable possessions that she should leave the burglars with so that they would not kill her siblings. However, it was impossible for her to get these things, after which her siblings were gradually murdered. The memory of it made her revolt against God and Tenshi. She is armed with a silver Beretta 92 .
Na-Ga designed Yuri according to her role as leader. At Maeda's request, he added a black headband, which was taken over from the character Yukiko Amagi from Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 . Meanwhile, the length of her hair and the addition of a green bow were determined at a meeting with production management. Both through her role and through her appearance she shows various similarities to Haruhi Suzumiya from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya , which led to cautious criticism in the run-up to the publication.
Tenshi ( 天使 , Tenshi , German "angel")
Tenshi, actually Kanade Tachibana ( 立 華 奏 , Tachibana Kanade ), is called by Yuri, who she thinks is an angel. Outwardly she shows very few emotions and fights as a servant of God against the members of the SSS. In this role she has various skills that make it almost impossible to defeat her. So it is tried again and again to distract her as long as possible before she can get to the core of the operations.
Originally she was supposed to take on the role of a brave, fighting girl. Nevertheless, their appearance changed noticeably during the creation process and diverged more and more from the original design, which was similar to that of Shiki Ryōgi from Kara no Kyōkai - the Garden of sinners . Ultimately, she became a "quiet and mysterious girl" with white hair.
Yui ( ユ イ , Yui )
Yui is a hyperactive and very quick speaking girl. At the beginning of the plot, she is an assistant and a huge fan of Girls Dead Monster . When Iwasawa disappears and the place in the band has to be filled again, Yui applies for it and, due to the lack of alternatives, gets the place in the band, although she failed hopelessly at the introduction and almost strangled herself with the microphone cable. Due to her lively nature, she is perceived as extremely annoying by Hinata in particular, which leads to various, sometimes violent, arguments between the two and develops into a love in the process.
Outwardly, she has the appearance of a young girl with long, sometimes pinned up, pink-colored hair, paired with a devil's tail and ties on the upper arms and legs that look like shackles. This is in contrast to her previous life, which she had to live paralyzed due to a car accident “bedridden” and under the caring care of her mother. Through television, simple dreams and hopes grew in her, which can ultimately be fulfilled in the parallel world through Otonashi and ultimately through Hinata.

SSS members

The SSS (abbreviation for Shinda Sekai Sensen, 死 ん だ 世界 戦 線 , dt. "Front line of the world of the dead") is a loose association of young people who share the same fate. The group itself is under the leadership of Yuri, who gives the orders accordingly.

Hinata ( 日 向 秀 樹 , Hinata Hideki )
Hinata is a member of the SSS and has a bright, reliable and friendly personality. He loves to make provocative comments with humor and becomes Otonashi's best friend. At the same time, he builds a love-hate relationship with Yui. As a careful observer, he quickly discovers the secret of Otonashi. Since then he has been helping him to make the other members "disappear".
Takamatsu ( 高 松 , Takamatsu )
The glasses wearer Takamatsu has a very reserved personality. Others describe him as a fool despite his apparently intelligent look. In the fifth episode of the series it turns out that he secretly trains and has a muscular body, which is not to be expected of him in his normal things. Since this humorous undressing scene, he has been shown repeatedly with a naked torso as a running gag .
Noda ( 野 田 , Noda )
Noda is a loner who is usually armed with a halberd . He has a habit of not listening to anyone but Yuri, whom he worships in a form of unrequited love. Among other things, he has a grudge against Otonashi, whom he would like to kill several hundred times in a row. The others consistently describe him as an idiot and he keeps running into the traps he has set up himself.
Shiina ( 椎 名 , Shiina )
Shiina takes on the role of a female ninja and defends herself with two Kodachi and other typical weapons. She has an enormous ability to concentrate and can sense dangers in advance. However, she has a weakness for cute things that can get out of her control. Frustrated by this, she forces herself to balance with various objects. For example, in the 4th episode she balances a broom the entire time, even though she is a player in a baseball tournament.

Anime television series

Involved

The work itself goes back to an idea of Jun Maeda , one of the founders of the game developer Key , and the artist Na-Ga , who previously worked on various Key game titles. In an interview published in Dengeki G's Magazine in July 2009, shortly after Key's sixth game Little Busters! appeared, it was announced that Hironori Toba from Aniplex approached the developers in October 2007 to produce an independent anime television series. After several meetings between Maeda and Toba, the basic idea for the series finally developed.

At Maeda's request, Na-Ga began character design in early 2008 , although he feared that it would delay Key's other graphic work. Maeda nominated Na-Ga mainly because of him for Little Busters! designed characters had become popular and he also had a certain sympathy for him. So Na-Ga ultimately determined the design of the characters, who have strong parallels in style to the previous work and, at the request of the production management and Maeda, took over various elements of characters from other works.

Producer Toba decided to have the anime produced by the animation studio PA Works , although most of Key's works have been animated by Kyōto Animation . Toba justified his decision with the fact that he had noticed PA Works in advance by working on Fullmetal Alchemist and Darker than Black , where Aniplex also appeared as a producer. But what really convinced him was the studio's work on the anime version of true tears , the high quality of which impressed him. At a meeting with Maeda, they are said to have come up with the subject, although Maeda also had no objections to such a cooperation, since he had also become aware of PA Works through true tears . So the decision was finally made to have the anime animated by the studio. At the same time Toba appointed Seiji Kishi as director of the series because he had the necessary experience and assertiveness to sufficiently motivate the employees of PA Works, many of whom are still quite young.

Kishi himself was approached by PA Works director Kenji Horikawa and informed that they wanted to make a film of "a school comedy written by a game developer". His surprise is said to have been all the greater when he learned that Jun Maeda is the writer of the script and that the plot goes far beyond that of a school comedy. So it is a mix of different elements in which action scenes, musical appearances and drama collide. Informed about this, Kishi insisted that Satoki Iida should take over the production of the sound effects and music, which he also had Maeda read the script for, since the plot focused on the music. However, Iida had to admit that his music was rather untypical for an anime and he was forced to make various attempts to produce the right mood together with Maeda. He named the synchronization of the music to the scenes in the series as one of the main problems.

As character designer and director of animation, Toba Katsuzō Hirata , who had attracted attention through his involvement in Gurren Lagann and Strike Witches . Above all, Toba praised his ability to work quickly and persistently.

Content conception

Jun Maeda was asked to draft a script for a series that takes up the typical elements of Key's previous works and consequently should consist of “moving moments of humor and tears”. In search of a new idea, Maeda finally came to the decision to let the action take place in a world between life and death, which would also have the advantage that all characters are already dead and therefore do not have to shy away from anything in arguments. Thus, the world would be portrayed as a precious and wonderful thing in which the characters still struggle against their fate.

Hironori Toba, the producer of Aniplex , announced in November 2009 that the thirteen episode series would not be able to reproduce all of the story Maeda had for Angel Beats! had devised. For this reason, various side stories have been outsourced to other media, which should complement the plot of the anime.

publication

On March 22, 2010, the first episode of the thirteen episode series was shown to a restricted audience. This could qualify for it through a lottery that was held at the beginning of the month. The series officially began on April 3 and ran on June 26, 2010, depending on midnight (and thus on the previous television day ) on CBC , as well as on the channels TBS , MBS , Tulip-TV , RKB Mainichi Hōsō and BS11 Digital with the offset Charisma. In Japan, the series was then released between June 23, 2010 to December 22, 2011 on seven DVDs and Blu-rays, each with two episodes. The last one featured an extra episode called Stairway to Heaven , as well as a 2-minute alternate ending called Another Epilogue in which Otonashi decides to stay behind to help the following newcomers in the intermediate world. In 2015 a new Blu-ray Edition was released, which also contains the OVA Hell's Kitchen . A 240-page guidebook with interviews, background articles, illustrations, designs from production and fan art was also published as accompanying material .

Universum Anime has licensed the series for the German-speaking area . From December 2011, they published three DVD or BluRay boxes ( Angel Beats! Vol. 1–3) at intervals of approx. 1 month . Each box contains 4-5 episodes of the series plus extras. Volume 1 appeared on December 16, 2011 with episodes 1–5, followed by volume 2 on January 19, 2012 with episodes 6–9 and finally volume 3 appears on February 17, 2012 with the remaining episodes 10–13 and the OVA Stairway to Heaven . The German dubbed version was also broadcast by Animax from March 8 to April 26, 2013 and then repeated several times.

Sentai Filmworks licensed the series for North America and distributed it through Section23 Films from June 26, 2011 on DVD and Blu-Ray. Siren Visual started a release for Australia and New Zealand in September 2011. The platform Crunchyroll streamed the anime in Latin America, Netflix in Spain, Italy and Portugal. In addition, French and Korean synchronized versions were made.

Original video animation

To Angel Beats! also came out three OVAs: Another Epilogue , Stairway to Heaven and Hell's Kitchen . The OVA Another Epilogue is an alternative ending and is the shortest OVA at just under 3 minutes.

Stairway to Heaven

The OVA Stairway to Heaven is next to the alternative ending the 1st OVA by Angel Beats! . It is structured like a regular episode of the main series and is arranged chronologically after the fourth episode of the series.

The OVA is about the rebels (the SSS group), who launched Operation High Tension for one day, during which it is important to behave as loudly, wildly and happily as possible To make angels so perplexed that he automatically leads them to God to ask for help there. Otonashi, however, has little to gain from the whole thing.

Hell's Kitchen

The OVA Hell's Kitchen is the 2nd OVA that was published in Japan in the 2nd quarter of 2015, but has not yet appeared in German-speaking countries (as of Aug. 2015). It was released at the same time as the new Japanese Blu-ray Edition and with the OVA Stairway to Heaven is one of the 2 special episodes (as they are called by the Japanese publisher).

The OVA is again about a day with the SSS group, which this time is having an operation that is supposed to lure the angel out again. The operation should take place in the " Golden Week ", the task of the group members is to kill each other at a picnic with the group and if possible so that they all become demons so that the angel and God are on the scene call.

music

For Maeda it was the first time that he had to work out a plot on his own. So he only got to work on the music after completing the development of the essential plot sections. In the remaining time he composed about 15 tracks for the fictional band Girls Dead Monster . According to his own statement, he was guided by the sound and song of a typical high school band. For this reason, the music in the opening and closing credits should differ significantly from the rest of the series, even though these two titles were composed by Maeda.

The tracks were arranged by the Anant-Garde Eyes group. So also the opening title My Soul, Your Beats! which was interpreted by Lia . The end credits Brave Song were sung by Aoi Tada . The single My Soul, Your Beats! / Brave Song , on which the titles of both singers were included, was released on May 26, 2010 by Aniplex. It debuted at 3rd place on the Japanese music chart and sold 80,000 copies in the first week. A total of 147,479 copies of the single were sold in 2010, which made it gold from the RIAJ and landed at number 38 of the top 100 singles of the year, even just ahead of the very successful K-On! -Singles.

The insert single Crow Song was released on April 23, 2010 under the name of the fictional and anime appearing band Girls Dead Monster . It contained the three interludes Crow Song , Alchemy and My Song which were also interpreted by this fictional band within the first three episodes. Maeda wrote the composition and lyrics of all the tracks on the single. The songs sung by Marina were arranged by Hikari Shūyō. According to Oricon, the single sold 16,400 times within four days, reaching number 7 in the Japanese charts. In the whole of 2010 it sold 81,405 times and landed at number 84 on the annual best list.

On May 12, 2010, the single Thousand Enemies was released. Their third single, Little Braver, followed on June 9, 2010 .

Light novel

A series of seven short stories, written by Jun Maeda and illustrated by GotoP , appeared in Dengeki G's Magazine, published by ASCII Media Works , from the November 30th 2009 issue to the May 30th April 2010 issue . The Angel Beats! Stories published on Track Zero focus on Hinata as the main character. They provide a background to Angel Beats! and deal with the circumstances of the establishment of the SSS . An eighth side story appeared in Dengeki G's Festival Deluxe Vol. 6 on March 26, 2010.

Manga

A building on the original concept of the series yonkoma - Manga entitled Angel Beats! The 4-koma: Bokura no Sensen Kōshinkyoku (Angel Beats! The 4 コ マ 僕 ら の 戦 線 行進 曲 ♪ ) started in the December 2009 issue (October 2009). The series published in Dengeki G's Magazine at ASCII Media Works is drawn by Haruka Komowata . It was completed in October 2013 and later published in four edited volumes. Another Yonkoma manga was also written by Haruka Komowata. It showed the progress of the anime project, the first chapter of which was published in September 2009, the last in July 2010. Another Yonkoma series ran under the title Angel Beats! The 4-koma: Osora no Shinda Sekai kara (Angel Beats! The 4 コ マ お 空 の 死 ん だ 世界 か ら ) from December 2013 to January 2016 at Dengeki G's . This was then published in two anthologies.

A story manga called Angel Beats! Heaven's Door was drawn by Yuriko Asami . The first chapter was reprinted in the May 2010 (March 2010) issue of Dengeki G's Magazine . The series was completed in October 2016 and published by the publisher in eleven edited volumes. An English version was published by Seven Seas Entertainment . The Angel Beats series is by the same artist ! The Last Operation , which started at Dengeki G's in August 2017 . After the magazine was discontinued, the series switched to online publication by ComicWalker and Niconico Seiga. So far, three edited volumes have been published.

reception

The sixth episode of the series, which was broadcast on May 9, 2010 (or May 8 as TV day ) in the Kansai region on MBS , achieved an audience rating of 4.9%, making it the most watched episode in the Anime Shower called late night program for three years. So she was ahead of the subsequent second season of the hugely successful series K-On !! .

The anthologies of the manga by Yuriko Asami sold around 40,000 copies in Japan in the first or the first two weeks after publication.

In their criticism of the anime, the German magazine Animania describes the story as "multi-layered, intricate and complex", but told so well that you can quickly find your way between the many characters, because each of the characters has clear visual and character features as well a background story. As the plot progresses, the individual fates are gradually illuminated and a critical look at modern society is repeatedly cast. In the battles in the afterlife as well as in the stories of the characters, action and violence are not saved, but the presentation remains tactful. The tragic scenes alternate with “chaotic, happy action comedy”. The story is accompanied by a "wide range of lively music". The anime is visually impressive with "crystal spherical color gradients and three-dimensional glittering effects against clear backgrounds". Overall, the series was an all-round success. The German synchronization is also convincing.
