The Toni Demetz Hut ([ˈdeːmɛts]) ( Ladin Utia Toni Demetz , Italian Rifugio Toni Demetz ) is a refuge in the Langkofel Group in the Dolomites .
Location and surroundings
The hut is located on the Langkofelscharte between the Langkofel and the Fünffingerspitze at an altitude of 2685 m . It is located in the municipality of Selva di Val Gardena in South Tyrol , Italy .
The easiest way to get to the Toni-Demetz-Hütte is from the Sella Pass in the southeast . From there, in addition to the climb, a gondola lift built in 1960 also leads up in summer, which ends directly at the hut. Head north-west into the Langkofelkar to the Langkofelhütte and continue down towards Val Gardena .
The hut serves as a base for climbing tours in the mountains of the surrounding Langkofel group. In addition to Langkofel and Fünffingerpitze, these include Grohmannspitze , Zahnkofel and Plattkofel .
history
On August 17, 1952, the young mountain guide Toni Demetz was struck by lightning along with two Milanese tourists on the Sassolungo. Giovanni “Giuani” Demetz, Toni's father, was the first to arrive at the scene of the accident and carried the only survivor, one of the two Milanese, into the valley. For his help, he was awarded the Gran Ordine del Cardo by the President of the Republic .
In memory of his deceased son, Giuani Demetz decided to build a refuge on the Langkofelscharte as accommodation for mountaineers. After receiving approval from the Italian government, construction began in autumn 1953. The hut was inaugurated in 1954. The Niederkofler family managed the hut from 1987 to 2008, and since then it has been run by Giuani's son Enrico Demetz and his family.
