The Grohmannspitze ( Ladin Sas da duman , Italian Punta Grohmann ) lies in the Val Gardena Dolomites and is a 3114 m (according to other information also 3112 or 3126 m ) high summit in the Sassolungo Group . Together with the five-finger tip and the Langkofeleck , it forms one of the characteristic images of the Dolomites when viewed from the Sella Pass .
The summit was named in 1875 after Paul Grohmann , the Austrian alpinist and co-founder of the Austrian Alpine Club . The first ascent took place in 1880 by Michel Innerkofler single- handedly through the west face. During the Italianization of the South Tyrolean names under fascism, he received the alternative Italian name Sasso Levante .
The summit is only slightly lower than the highest peak of the mountain range (the Langkofel at 3,181 meters). Like the other parts of the Sassolungo Group, the Grohmannspitze is a frequent destination for mountaineers. The most popular route is the south face , which Antonio Dimai and the siblings Ilona and Rolanda von Eötvös first climbed in 1908.
