Tony Lorenzo Delk (born January 28, 1974 in Covington , Tipton County , Tennessee ) is a retired American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 1996 to 2006 . Delk is 1.88 meters tall and was used in both guard positions.

Player career

college

Delk began his career at the University of Kentucky , where he played for the Wildcats. He quickly attracted attention and was able to collect a number of awards. Among other things, Delk was elected to the All-SEC 2nd team by the college trainers and to the All-SEC 3rd team by the press .

During the 1994/95 season Delk finally made it into the All-SEC 1st Team in the elections and was named NCAA Basketball Tournament Most Outstanding Player .

NBA

In the 1996 NBA draft , Delk was selected 16th by the Charlotte Hornets . He made his NBA debut on November 3, 1996 in a game against the New York Knicks , in which he scored 14 points. With the Hornets he was under contract until November 1997, when he was transferred to the Golden State Warriors together with Muggsy Bogues in exchange for BJ Armstrong . He stayed with the Oakland team for two years before moving to the Sacramento Kings .

After only one season with the Kings, Delk signed a contract with the Phoenix Suns . There he achieved his previous personal best for points on January 2, 2001. In a game against his former team Sacramento Kings, which was decided in extra time, Delk scored 53 points and had 20 of 27 hits from the field. Also in this game he achieved his personal best of 13 assists .

After his stay with the Suns, Delk moved to the Boston Celtics where he stayed for two years. After further stints at the Dallas Mavericks , Atlanta Hawks and Detroit Pistons , Delk moved abroad for the first time and signed a one-year contract with an option for another year with the Greek record champions Panathinaikos Athens , where he was able to win the only title of his career in 2007.

In his entire NBA career, Delk had an average of 9.1 points and 21.5 minutes of use per game.

Coaching career

After playing as a player, Delk took over the post of assistant coach in 2009 for his former college team, the Kentucky Wildcats . From 2011 to 2013 he was an assistant coach with the New Mexico State Aggies college team.
