The topographic map of Grafschaft Mark was created by Friedrich Christoph Müller in 1775. A new copy based on a triangulation of the County of Mark was published in 1791.

Map from 1775

Müller had toured the county in three weeks. He wrote: "I came back much happier than I left." By the end of October 1775 the map was ready. Müller wrote in his diary that the card was "received with applause" in Berlin. The work from 1775 shows offices, courts, parishes, localities and noble houses of the County of Mark . A special edition shows the mines . He lists 183 names of mines. The pen drawings are each approximately 62.0 cm × 86.0 cm. The scale is: 2 Westphalian miles = 16.4 cm (1: 122.488).

The versions from 1775 are:

  • Charter from GRAFFSCHAFFT MARCK.
  • New and complete special situations chart from Grafschektiven MARCK.
  • New and complete Special Situations Chart of the County of MARCK (with a list of all) names of those hard coal mines that are mostly in operation in the County of MARCK, the numbers placed next to them, at the same time, prove their location on the chart.

The design met with criticism because of missing locations and misspellings.

The version of 1777 gives the following information:

In the left part of the map: “The Grafschäft Marck is divided into Hellweg and Sauerland . This lies north of the Ruhr, holds 18 square miles, is for the most part flat and fertile. This lies south of the same, is very native and now and then barren, holds 13 1/2 square meters. The more precise division is in 4 district councilors, which are 1) the Hammische, these include the offices of Hamm , Unna , Lünen and the courts of Camen, Schwerte, Haaren, Heeren, Reck and Buddeburg. 2) the hearing, which includes the offices of Hörde , Bochum , Blanckenstein and the courts of Eickel, Langendreer, Strünckede, Castrop, Mengeden, Horst, Stiepel, Herbede, Bruch and Witten. 3) Altenaische, which includes the offices of Altena , Neuenrade , Plettenberg and the parishes of Ludenscheid, Hulscheid, Herrscheid, Halver, Kierspe, Breckerfeld, Vahlbert, Meinerzhagen and Rönfahl. 4) the Wetterische, which includes the Iserlon Office and the Vollmarstein, Hagen, Hemern courts, as well as the Schwelm High Court. The Soester Börder is especially counted. "

In the right part of the map: “Nota. In the Sauerland, in order to find out the distance of the places by the ruler, one has to calculate a little more, because the paths by which the distances are generally calculated go around and over the mountains , and this map is drawn according to the true projection of the places . "

Map from 1791

On the mediation of the king, Müller received an order from Baron vom Stein in autumn 1788 to triangulate the entire county of Mark. In 1789/1790 he recorded 38 fixed points with a theodolite . His writing Trigonometrische Vermessung der Grafschaft Mark together with a geographical network made according to it appeared in 1789, the map appeared in 1791. It has an accuracy of about ± 40 m.
