Torre de Cap Andritxol

The Torre de Cap Andritxol is a watchtower from the late 16th century in Es Camp de Mar, belonging to the municipality of Andratx, on the Balearic island of Mallorca .

history

At the end of the 16th century, defense towers began to protect the coast of Mallorca against attacks from the sea. The Torre de Cap Andritxol, built from 1580 to 1582, is one of a series of towers that were built around the same time and were in visual contact with one another. In today's municipality of Andratx these are the Talaia de na Guinavera , the Torre de Llebeig , the Torre de la Mola and the Torre de Cala en Basset .

After the tower lost its military importance in the 19th century, it fell into disrepair, but was restored from 2003 to 2004 by the architect Joan González de Chaves. Model Claudia Schiffer, as the owner of the property at the time, on which the tower stands , bore the costs of € 60,000 . The architect was criticized for his work by monument conservationists. In particular, the steel sheets attached to the parapet would distort the historical appearance of the tower.

The tower stands at a height of 180 m on the border between the municipalities of Andratx and Calvià on one of the highest points of Cape Andritxol. From here the view extends over the bay of Santa Ponça in the east and the bay of Es Camp de Mar in the west. The cylindrical tower with a circular floor plan has an outer diameter of 7.34 meters and a height of about 8 meters. It is built with large joints from rubble stones and partly plastered. Inside there is a large circular room with a domed ceiling. Its inner diameter is 4.10 meters and its maximum height is 3.50 meters. The access to this room is on the northeast side of the tower at a height of about 4 meters above the ground, so that it could only be reached from the outside with a ladder or stairs. It is rectangular, 1.15 m high and nowadays closed by a wooden door. The room has several small windows and, opposite the entrance, access to the roof platform, which could be reached via a wooden staircase. The platform, surrounded by an 80 centimeter wide parapet, has a diameter of 5.74 meters. The parapet is up to 110 cm high. Three areas, only 60 cm high, open up a view of Es Camp de Mar, Cape Llamp and the Bay of Peguera . There used to be a cannon on the roof platform . The remains of a box in which their ammunition was kept are also documented.

Not far from the tower is a building made of coarse masonry, which was built in the 17th century for the tower keepers and expanded in the 19th century. Its front with separate entrances to the two windowless and 3.5 meter deep rooms is 8 meters wide. Originally the house was covered with Arabic roof tiles, which have not been there since the last restoration.

The Torre de Cap Andritxol has been a listed building since 1949 . It is registered in the Spanish Cultural Property Database ( Bienes de Interés Cultural ) under number RI-51-0008331. The tower is not accessible to visitors.
