Torsten Görlitzer from SC Traktor Oberwiesenthal belonged to the extended top of GDR luge in the second half of the 1980s and thus also to the extended world top in luge. Nationally, he was only able to win a bronze medal in 1986 behind Jacob and Walter. He achieved his greatest success two years earlier, when he qualified for the 1984 Winter Olympics alongside Loch and Walter . At the competitions in Sarajevo Görlitzer started with strong performances. In the first run he set the second best time, in the second run he was able to achieve the best time of all participants in the lap. However, after he missed the third run and was only tenth, he slipped out of the medal ranks. After the fourth run, he finally came in fifth.
