The profaned , listed Totenhofskirche is in Schmalkalden , a town in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district of Thuringia .

description

In 1541, with the relocation of the city cemetery from the city church of St. George to the new cemetery, a new chapel was built in place of the medieval Holy Cross chapel. This was replaced in 1760 by a simple building made of sandstone blocks.

The hall church standing at the gable in the street is covered with a mansard roof. The gable tower has a curved, slate-covered hood , which is crowned by a lantern .

The interior has two-storey, three-sided galleries and is covered with a wooden barrel vault. The stone pulpit from 1680 and numerous epitaphs of deceased people from Schmalkalden's upper class have been preserved. On the parapets of the pulpit there are cartouches with sayings and a Hessian coat of arms.
