The fourteenth stage of the Tour de France 2004 ran over 192.5 km from Carcassonne along the Mediterranean to Nîmes . The profile of the stage was slightly wavy. There were no mountain ratings and only two sprint ratings.

Immediately after the start there were attacks from Casper, Tombak, Scanlon and Auger. However, the field led by Fassa Bortolo immediately thwarted the attack.

The rest of the race was very uneasy. Leading groups often formed, but they were repeatedly asked by the field.

Only the top group with González, Flecha, Edaleine and Robin were able to build a more stable lead. However, the breakaway attempt ended at kilometer 67.

On the second part of the stage, Nicolas Jalabert tried to break away and formed a larger group. The outliers were Wrolich, Botero, Jalabert, Landaluze, Martinez, González, Fédrigo, González de Galdeano, Lotz and Mengin. The maximum lead was 13.5 minutes ahead of the field.

In the end, Aitor González was able to break away from the top group and won confidently.
