Toyoda Eiji AC ( Japanese 豊 田 英 二 ; * September 12, 1913 in Kinjō , Nishikasugai-gun (today: Horibata-chō, Nishi-ku , Nagoya ), Aichi Prefecture ; † September 17, 2013 in Toyota ) was a Japanese manager and Chief Executive Officer ( daihyō-torishimariyaku -shachō ; "executive director and president") of the Japanese automobile company Toyota ( Toyota Jidōsha KK ).

Life

Eiji was born to Toyoda Heihachi, whose brother was Toyoda Sakichi . Sakichi's son Kiichirō, in turn, was the founder of Toyota, a cousin of Eiji.

He completed his mechanical engineering studies at the Imperial University of Tokyo in 1936. In April of the same year he joined the company. In May 1945 he became director ( 取締 役 , torishimariyaku ), in July 1950 managing director ( 常務 , jōmu ), in July 1953 chief executive officer ( 専 務 , semmu ), in February 1960 deputy president ( 副 社長 , fuku-shachō ) and in October 1967 president ( 社長 , shachō ). In 1982 he resigned from this position and became chairman of the board of directors ( 会長 , kaichō ).

Toyoda Eiji was largely responsible for the introduction of the luxury brand Lexus .

In 1994 he resigned as chairman at the age of 81.
