Trader Joe’s is an American food retail chain with approx. 460 branches (as of February 16, 2017) mainly in the western United States .
Business concept
Joe Coulombe (1930–2020) founded the chain of stores in 1958 under the name Pronto Markets , in 1967 he renamed it Trader Joe’s and reoriented it to a new business idea . In 1979 the company was taken over by the German Markus Foundation . The Markus Foundation is owned by the Theo Albrecht junior families , the eldest son of the Aldi Nord founder Theo Albrecht , and Babette Albrecht , the wife of his second son Berthold Albrecht .
A special feature of the shops are the employees dressed in Hawaiian shirts ; the branch managers are called the captain (“ captain ”), the deputy second mate (“second mate ”) and the other employees are called the crew (“crew”). The range, like that of the Aldi stores, is very limited and does not include more than around 3000 items. In addition to everyday foods, these include specialties such as delicacies , products from organic farming , vegetarian and imported foods and wines.
In 2006, Handelsblatt assessed the business concept of Trader Joe's as follows: “The product selection is limited - a mixture of a bit organic, a bit gourmet and a bit discount . In short everything that the class-conscious, left-liberal American needs. "
