Dirt bike

The fun sport dirt jump (German: "dirt jump") is a variant of cycling . It describes jumping over mounds of earth with a BMX or a dirt bike (mountain bike). The aim of a jump is to do a trick in the air. The best building material for artificial mounds is loam , as it is strong, durable and easy to shape.

history

Dirtpark M-Trails in Magdeburg

Trails , which is closer to the actual description of dirt jumps, have existed since the beginning of BMX . One of the oldest trails in Germany can be found in Gravenbruch near Frankfurt am Main . However, these trails were modeled even more on a BMX track. The first real trails were probably the K-Town Trails in Kornwestheim , which were built in 1994. With the construction of the K-Town Trails, wild BMX tracks like Gravenbruch were quickly expanded into "proper" trails. Today's ERA Trails , which could still be used until October 30, 2006, always faced the risk of giving way to a warehouse. This construction project has now been started on the site.

The most famous trails of all are likely to have been the Sheep Hills in Huntington Beach during the 1990s . Huntington Beach in Orange County has long been considered the mecca of the dirt scene. On the east coast, however, the Pennsylvania state trail scene evolved around the city of Bethlehem . Celebrity local drivers in the Sheep Hills were or are bar spinners Ryan, Josh Stricker, Foster Bros and Shawn Buttler. In the Bethlehem Posh, the most famous driver was Kris Bennett.

Trail riding was shaped by riders like Shawn Butler and Kris Bennett. During the 1990s, many BMX racers took part in dirt jump competitions because they were familiar with jumping from large mounds of earth, especially Brian Foster who made a name for himself who soon changed camps.

The decisive factor in Germany was the “second generation” of trails that were built by Markus Hampl in Diedorf and Augsburg from the mid-1990s. Trails in Bochum (Mike Emde, Stefan Kudella, Jochen Forstmann) and Solingen (Dirk Becker) also played a major role in the late 1990s.

The first document of German passion for trails is the BMX video FAHRVERGNÜGEN by twentyinchsoul (Flo de Neufville and Evert Greis), in which a road trip from 1999 is documented. Among others, drivers like Sören Jakobs, Timo Pritzel , Markus Hampl, Sascha Meyenborg, Oli Aschenbrenner and Mike Emde can be seen.

Today there are a number of trails all over Germany and they are no longer BMX- specific. More and more trails are also being built by mountain bikers.

In the meantime, the style of MTB sport has also moved closer to that of BMX, so that the same set and trails can be ridden by both groups. The trails in Fürth are a good example of this. Niels-Peter Jensen is one of the most famous German MTB dirt bikers who made the sport popular . Martin Söderström, Sam Pilgrim, Brandon Semenuk, Andreu Lacondeguy, Brett Rheeder, Sam Reynolds, Thomas Genon and Yannik Granieri regularly take top places in the very popular slopestyle competitions and the like. a. in Whistler and Winterberg . Amir Kabbani from Boppard, who became known through the District Ride in Nuremberg , is currently one of the best German dirt bike riders. He is the only German to take part in the complete Qashqai Urban Challenge of the car manufacturer Nissan and, before the last tour stop in Paris, is 17th with 12 points (as of June 8, 2007). In addition to big drops , northshore and wallride elements, these contests also include various dirt jumps and street pieces.

Jumps

Table

Table

The Table ( Engl. : Table ) is composed of jump, centerpiece and landing slope. They are usually between 1 m and 4 m high and up to 8 m long. Tables require far more earth volume and are therefore less common than doubles. However, they are more recommendable for beginners, since with tables the consequences of a jump that is too short are not as dramatic as with a double.

"Slopestyle jump" consists of a kicker and a landing. In this case, kicker can also be made of wood. They are the epitome of slopestyle.

Step up

The step-up consists of a take-off (kicker) and a landing, just like the double, but the landing is significantly higher than the take-off. The jump is usually steeper than for the other types and therefore the step-up is a so-called trick jump used (Trick-jump). The risk of injury is rather low due to the middle piece, as with a table, since a fall can only occur from a low height when jumping. A step-up can also consist of a jump (kicker) and an elevated landing without a center piece.

Step down

The step-down consists of a take-off kicker and a landing that is at a significantly lower level than the take-off. The jump is usually flatter than with normal jumps, as you usually also jump into the distance. This jump is often more dangerous than the step-up, as the difference in altitude also increases speed.

Tricks

All of these jumps are about performing tricks. Here is a list of many possible tricks (all performed in the air):

Motowhip = The bike is placed across the direction of movement while jumping.

Tabletop = The bike is "placed" in the air so that it is in a horizontal position.

Onehander = One hand is taken from the handlebars and stretched as far up or to the side as possible.

Tuck Nohander = Take your hands off the handlebars and support the handlebars in the pelvic area. The arms are stretched as far back as possible.

Suicide Nohander = The hands are also taken off the handlebars, the arms are stretched as far back as possible and the bike is stabilized with the knees on the saddle.

360 = The driver makes a complete 360-degree turn around his own axis with his bike. -> There are also 720's in which another screw is turned. A 1440 has already been jumped.

Backflip = backflip . There are also double back flips, but so far only one triple back flip has been landed with a BMX bike.

Front flip = forward somersault. This trick is much more difficult than the backflip, because with the front flip you have to turn 120 ° more (as the ramp normally "kicks" the bike backwards, so to speak in a backflip).

Tailwhip = The hands hold the handlebars and the frame of the bike is pushed once around the handlebars with the foot. Double and triple tail whips are also possible, as well as a combination with other tricks.

Barspin = turning the handlebar. You turn the handlebars once through 360 ° and then catch it again. Optionally, you can clamp the saddle with your knees to prevent the bike from falling. There is also the option of combining several barspins in a row or in other tricks (backflip, frontflip, 360).

Knocker = The driver does one-hander. Meanwhile he hits the helmet with his fist.

No Foot Cancan = both feet are taken off the pedals and then "swung" to one side of the frame.

One foot can = One foot is taken off the pedal and stretched to the other side of the frame in front of the foot that has remained on the pedal.

Nacnac = One foot is stretched to the other side of the frame behind the foot that has remained on the pedal. In addition, the driver can bend his knees with the foot still on the pedal.

Superman = Both feet are taken off the pedals and stretched backwards, while the arms stretch the bike forward.

Bar Fuck = Porn = the driver touches the handlebars with his intimate body area (also possible in combos).

X-Up = handlebar is rotated 180 °.

cross-up = handlebar is rotated 90 °.

Abbreviations for combos

  • truck = truckdriver = 360 barspin
  • 3 whip = 360 tailwhip
  • Flipwhip = backflip tailwhip
  • 3 tuck = 360 tucknohand
  • Fliptuck = backfliptucknohand
  • Cork 7 = 720 backflip

Movies

Well-known films of the sport are:

  • Kranked
  • New World Disorder

  • Where The Trail Ends
  • Life Cycles
  • What's next?
  • From The Inside Out

One of the most famous German films is “Action Heroes”, which was shot by Lukas Tielke and Manuel Rueda, also known as peopleGrapher. Like “What's Next?”, This was offered free of charge on the Internet.

Bikes

The bikes used in this sport have a small and sturdy frame. In addition, these are almost always equipped with only one brake. This minimalist equipment of the bike is deliberately chosen to save weight and thus to be able to perform tricks more easily, and thereby to make the bike more stable. Dirt bikes are hardtails . Dirt bikes with a center damper are called slopestyle bikes .
