Transilvanian Hunger is a song by the Norwegian metal band Darkthrone . It appeared on their fourth album Transilvanian Hunger in 1994 . The lyrics allude to vampirism , which is hardly relevant in Black Metal, but is treated by some bands such as Black Funeral , Nåstrond or Necromantia .

Emergence

Fenriz recorded the guitar tracks first and then the drums with the Necrohell portable studio. Then he sent the lyrics to Nocturno Culto. When he came to Fenriz, they moved to another Necrohell studio because of the singing.

The song is repetitive and continuously in 4 / 4 held -Stroke. The guitar run consists of exactly two riffs in which the chords are always played at the same tempo and the A string is either open or two frets lower than the D string. The chord changes in the first main riff all happen at the same time interval, in the second the interval is generally somewhat larger, but again between the penultimate (D9, A7) and last chord (D10, A8) as in the first. The third sequence with a longer distance between the chords (again first D9 and A7, then D10 and A8) is not to be regarded as the third riff.

The bass run is played exclusively on the E and A strings, which are open for most of the run.

On the drums, the same rhythm, a kind of blastbeat , in which the big drum is played continuously and the hi-hat and snare drum alternate with each hit, is maintained throughout the song.

reception

The song has been covered by numerous bands from the Black Metal environment, some of which use the Transylvanian Hunger spelling in contrast to the original . These include versions of Blodsrit (on the EP Secrets Unveiled ), Ashen Light (on the album В Сострадании К Отверженным: Осуждённым - Ад! ), Gehenna (on the tribute album Darkthrone Holy Darkthrone. , Azhen Payinghal (on Norwegian Darkthrone ) the demo recording Black Terror Metal ), Watain (on the live MC The Ritual Macabre ) and in the right-wing extremist area Darkthule (on the compilation Summon Thee to Awake the Ancient Past , there titled Transylvanian Hunger ), The Call (on their EP of the same name), Nachtfalke (on the split EP with Surturs Lohe ) and Thunderbolt (on the re-release of The Burning Deed of Deceit ). Many of them retain the original's arrangements and tempo; some, like those of Gehenna and The Call, increase the tempo.

The Australian band Mutorkseht covered the song for the tribute album The Next Thousand Years Are Ours - A Tribute to Darkthrone , but rearranged it. So she changed the drum rhythm considerably and let it be played by a drum computer . Also after about 50 seconds the guitar stops completely and the drum computer almost stops working for a short time.

The Brazilian band Mysteriis recorded a version that starts with a keyboard that plays the melody of the first main riff and a female soprano voice that begins after about 15 seconds . The drums only start after 29 seconds with a cymbal strike and are initially played slowly, only after more than half a minute do the guitar and the first male scream set in. The melody line still keeps the keyboard, and the female vocals accompany the actual, gutturally performed lyrics, and the song remains slow; only with the beginning of the second main riff after one and a half minutes does the pace increase. After that, the singing is only accompanied by the female voice again after more than five minutes and the tempo is reduced shortly afterwards, after about five and a half minutes the tempo is increased again and female singing is dispensed with. This version was released in 2000 under the title Transylvanian Hunger on the EP Fucking in the Name of God .

The Danish band Skjold released a version of the song on the EP Alt ondt Skal Come from Norden .. in 2001 , which begins with a more or less repetitive, noisy arrangement that only ends after more than two minutes; after a scream underlaid with reverb, the actual song begins, which retains the arrangements of the original, but the guitar has a much more unclean sound and the hi-hat stands out more clearly from the drumming.

The band Nagelfar translated the text into German and published their version under the title Transsilvanischer Hunger 2004 as a bonus track for the double LP version of the album Virus West on Perverted Taste.

Stylistically, however, a version of the band Transilvanian Beat Club stands out, as the band plays a mixture of Gothic Metal and Punk . Her version of the song, which appeared on her 2006 debut album, Welcome to the Club! appeared, is accompanied by a keyboard and the text is not sung gutturally; Here too, the drum rhythm in particular was changed considerably.

In the version released in the same year by the Ukrainian band Dragobrath on their debut Scripture of the Woods , the drums are played over long stretches and at a consistently enormous speed, after just over a minute the song is abruptly interrupted and after just a few seconds of folk music -Passage immediately resumed at an enormous pace. Instead, the tempo of the drums varies in the passages during which the second main riff is played. A keyboard is used in the second of these passages.

The Slovak band Alatyr recorded a version for their album of the same name that begins with a keyboard version of the first main riff, but this is more subtle than Mysteriis and only continues the riff for a short time after the guitar has been used until the drums kick in. With the second main riff after 56 seconds, the drums are only played slowly until you switch back to the first main riff. Subsequently, the high speed is also maintained with the second main riff, only after 3 minutes and 49 seconds is this accompanied by a slow passage again. Only at the end of the normal instrumentation can a soft keyboard melody be heard again, based on the first main riff.
