history

The year 1776 is given as the year of birth of the city. However, this date appears to be chosen arbitrarily as there are no written records of it. The place appears in older reports with the names Trap , Trapp or Trappe . From 1856 only the name Trappe is used. There are several theories about the origin of the name, the main ones being:

  • The place got its name after a local restaurant ( tavern ), in which travelers were seduced to stay a few days to spend a lot of money. The restaurant was therefore called a "trap" (English: trap ).
  • Sometimes it is assumed that the first block house map of the restaurant or in its outer form of a partridge trap (engl .: partridge trap ) was similar. Based on this, a city seal that shows a partridge is often used.
  • According to another version, the place was named after the wolves , which were not uncommon in the area and were caught in traps by trappers ( wolf trap ).
  • A least likely theory is that it in the area monastery of Trappist gave, after which the place was named.

Due to the proximity to the water and the natural beauty of the surrounding area, some tourism and fishing businesses have developed in Trappe over the years, especially because of the blue crabs that occur in Chesapeake Bay .
